Job overview

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust is a forward looking dynamic well managed organisation with an award winning finance department. Airedale NHS Foundation Trust is located close to Skipton, with the nearby Yorkshire Dales and is regarded as a very pleasant place to work. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our award winning Finance team for a Payroll Officer  to join our Payroll team.  The role supports the Payroll Department to deliver a high-quality payroll service in an efficient and effective manner to Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and AGH Solutions Limited.  To pay all their employees in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with statutory obligations, and local and National Terms and Conditions of Service.

Based in the Finance department located off the main hospital site at Gateway House in Skipton, the team act as point of contact for managers and budget holders and all staff.

12 month fixed term contract.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the Payroll Officer include, but are not limited to:

·         To provide an accurate payroll and pension service to the Trust and AGH Solutions Ltd. 

·         To analyse and interpret complex payments (for example, following pay awards)

·         To act as point of contact for managers, budget holders and the staff within those areas.

·         Responsible for maintaining systems and payroll records to ensure that accurate payments are made and that the Trust’s and employees’ statutory requirements are met.

·         To understand and apply current payroll regulations relating to pay and conditions.

·         To calculate complex payments to employees of the Trust, for example maternity pay.

·         To maintain accurate sickness absence and entitlement records for each employee.  

·         To answer routine and complex queries from external organisations and agencies on payroll-related matters.

·         Actively investigates any discrepancies which have arisen and explains individual pay matters in a professional and tactful manner 

·         Identify all overpayments and deal with these in accordance with the Trust’s overpayment procedures.

·         To ensure that changes to employee’s details and pay and any payments made, are done so in line with the correct authorisation procedures. 

·         To maintain the confidentiality of Trust and employee information and use such information only as authorised for specific purposes.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • NVQ Level 4 or equivalent in finance-based subjects, or three years’ experience working in a similar environment.
Desirable criteria
  • • Studying towards a payroll-related qualification or equivalent.

Knowledge and awareness

Essential criteria
  • • Understanding and knowledge of dealing with sensitive and confidential issues, work policies and procedures (Data Protection Act)
Desirable criteria
  • • In depth knowledge and understanding of payroll systems, procedures and current legislation (manual and computerised).
  • • Knowledge of statutory regulations – PAYE, NIC, SSP, SMP, SAP, SPP.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • • Good written and verbal communication skills, using tact and diplomacy when required with the ability to make informed decisions.
  • • Ability to deal confidently with difficult and complex issues and resolve satisfactorily.
  • • Methodical approach and attention to detail.
  • • Excellent organisational skills with a proven ability to work on own initiative, organise self, prioritise and plan workloads, work to tight and conflicting deadlines whilst ensuring quality standards.
  • • Ability to work as part of a team and establish effective working relationships.
  • • Ability to work using own initiative and be self-motivated.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of working in a busy office environment and responding to competing demands
  • • Experience of working with computer software programmes such as Microsoft Office, e-mail and internet.
  • • Knowledge of the use and purpose of a payroll system.
Desirable criteria
  • • Previous experience of working as a Payroll officer
  • • Experience of working with a computerised payroll such as ESR.
  • n depth knowledge and understanding of NHS Terms and Conditions of Service, including Agenda for Change and Medical and Dental
