Job overview

An exciting opportunity to join Salisbury NHS Foundation time, Suitable applicants must have experience of performing clinical workload within an andrology &/or embryology laboratory setting and be familiar with the HFEA Code of Practice. The successful candidate must be registered as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC or have worked as a reproductive practitioner.

• Perform a range of scientific and clinical activities for the provision of services licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).
• To perform a specified range of clinical laboratory procedures, under the direct supervision of Clinical Scientists and in accordance with initial training and competence assessment. 
• To relay clinical and scientific advice to patients, clinicians and the multidisciplinary team under the direction of Clinical Scientists.
• To assist the Clinical Scientists for a specific area of laboratory management e.g., Cryostorage Services, Quality Management, environmental monitoring, key performance indicators, Donor sperm, with direct impact on patient care.
• To provide administrative support for all members of the SFC team.
• Work autonomously and under direction within departmental policies and procedures including developments to support the Quality Improvement Strategy.

Main duties of the job

• To participate in the highly complex laboratory procedures provided by the Salisbury Fertility Centre in accordance with scope of practice, training and competence assessment.
• To provide appropriate information to the Clinical Scientists who take responsibility for clinical decisions.
• To relay the specialist advice of registered or pre-registrant Clinical Scientists directly to patients concerning gamete and embryo quality, treatment options, risks and benefits, and possible outcomes before and during treatment cycles, including assisting patients to reach an informed decision regarding their options and choices.
• To convey, where necessary, relevant details of treatment (quality of oocytes, sperm and embryos) directly to patients in a clear, concise, and understanding manner.
• To counsel patients regarding the implications of treatment options to ensure correct information is given and relevant questions answered properly in order to assist them in making an informed decision.
• To break bad news to patients and counsel them regarding the outcome and further treatment options.
• To relay highly complex clinical advice to medical and nursing staff that directly affects patient management, including semen quality, oocyte quality, embryo quality, formulation of Departmental policies.
• To participate in the cryostorage storage audits and to assist with the system of contact for patients with gametes and/or embryos in storage.

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Bachelor’s Degree in life sciences Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist, or with the Academy for Healthcare Science as a Healthcare Science Practitioner, or eligible for registration within one year of appointment.

Experience

  • Expertise gained through working in a UK Licensed Fertility Centre and/or clinical laboratory.

  • Knowledge - Underpinning theoretical and academic scientific knowledge to Bachelors’ Level e.g. Life science degree
