Employer heading
Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology
Consultant
Applications for this role should be written by the applicant. If artificial intelligence (AI) programmes are used, then the application may be rejected due to this document being an important part of the assessment process. This does not prevent applicants seeking appropriate support with applications should they need to for the purposes of any declared disability.
Job overview
You will join a well-established consultant team, working collaboratively to further enhance and develop Diabetes and Endocrinology services across the Trust. You'll share responsibility for the day-to-day clinical leadership and operational delivery of the service, ensuring the highest standards of care are maintained across General Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology.
A key focus of the role will be contributing to the ongoing development and redesign of the Type 1 Diabetes service, with a particular emphasis on improving provision for young adults and antenatal diabetes, building on existing expertise in diabetes technology. You'll also have the opportunity to work closely with paediatric colleagues to strengthen and further develop the transition pathway into adult services. Additionally, the role includes medical leadership of the inpatient diabetes team. You will build on significant recent progress, with a focus on streamlining surgical pathways and implementing robust systems to ensure timely and effective follow-up of patients following discharge.
Whilst the Trust is particularly seeking expertise in inpatient and Type 1 diabetes care, the job plan will be flexible and can be tailored to reflect the successful candidate’s experience and interests across the wider Diabetes and Endocrinology specialty. You'll contribute to inpatient care on the dedicated diabetes base ward and will participate in the acute medical take as part of the consultant rota.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to develop skills and provide teaching for the doctors in training in their department. They will be expected to share with their consultant colleagues the roles of clinical supervisor / educational supervisor. This will involve the provision of supportive formal appraisals to doctors in training at regular intervals, induction at the beginning of their contracts and career advice as appropriate. Advice on the roles can be obtained from the Clinical Tutor.
We have a weekly MDT alternating between diabetes and endocrinology to discuss cases and work on service development.
