Job overview

The Salisbury GI Service is an ambitious, forward-thinking department, combining upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, gastroenterology and endoscopy.

The service provides complete care for patients with disorders relating to the gastrointestinal tract. Surgeons, physicians, specialist nurses and allied health professions work closely together to provide in house multidisciplinary care for all patients with gastrointestinal problems in both the emergency and elective inpatient and outpatient settings.

The successful candidate will join our team to provide an integrated digestive diseases service across the Salisbury area. The department is actively seeking improvements in the provision of services to the local community and to the region. We fully embrace multidisciplinary team working, and sub-specialisation, believing that this best serves the needs of our patients. The department has an excellent track record of leading innovation. We have a vision for our service that includes the continued development of minimal access surgery for all appropriate areas of general surgery including emergency work.

Main duties of the job

This post is full time, one-year fixed term post based on 10 sessions per week: 6 sessions of educational work and 4 sessions of clinical work in Surgery.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to undertake a Certificate in Medical Education which will be funded.

The successful candidate will work alongside the Associate Clinical Sub Dean, Surgery leads and the Medical Education team to coordinate and deliver outstanding training to medical students.

The successful candidate will be involved in organising and delivering clinical teaching to students in the final year and third year Medical Students of their course at Southampton University Medical School.

Successful candidate will be encouraged to undertake medical education research projects and quality improvement projects and will be encouraged to submit abstracts and attend medical education conferences (for example the Association for the Study of Medical Education, ASME).
