Contact Lens Optician

Band 6

Job overview

It is an exciting time to join our optometry team as a contact lens optician at Salisbury District Hospital Eye clinic. We pride ourselves in being a small, friendly department, with real drive to improve both patient care and the working environment for our staff.

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic contact lens optician to complement and support our clinical teams to provide innovative, optometric care.

Our Ophthalmology Department currently sees nearly 32,000 new patients per year and is active in shaping the strategy across the BSW (Bath, Swindon, Wiltshire) Eyecare Network and the BSW Hospitals Group.  Our diagnostic hub in Salisbury city centre complements the work undertaken on site at Salisbury District Hospital and over the last two years the team has developed virtual pathways for patients with AMD,  Glaucoma and more recently Keratoconus.

We are keen to expand our optometry team to deliver cost-effective, high quality care through provision of optometric and extended scope services.

This role is primarily in support of the contact lens service but there will be opportunities to support the lead orthoptist and optometrist to develop and deliver our low vision service.

Main duties of the job

As part of the optometry team at SFT, you will form an integral part of a developing service providing optometric and expanded scope services. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and delivery of the specialist contact lens service including fitting and aftercare of the patient, teaching the patient to use lenses safely, invoicing the patient where appropriate and keeping up to date with technological changes in the contact lens world.
It is also expected that the successful candidate will be a key team member in the optometrist and orthoptist led low vision service, leading their own low vision clinics and supplying patients with appropriate low vision aids as assessed.
There is scope to develop the role further within the context of the service needs and sustainability of service.

Please see attached job description and person specification for full details of roles and responsibilities.
