Job overview

We are inviting applications for a Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon with an interest in Skin, Trauma and Mohs.

The Department provides most areas of Plastic surgery and houses the supra-regional services for Cleft Lip and Palate ,Burns Unit and Laser Service. The catchment population is approximately 3 million covering areas including Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Isle of Wight and some patients in the Channel Islands. Attached to the Department and integral to the service is the Wessex Rehabilitation Centre which undertakes rehabilitation for patients who have experienced hand and lower limb trauma.

 

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a busy surgical skin service operating between Salisbury Foundation Trust and University Hospital Southampton NHS Trusts.

The applicant is expected to have an interest in all aspects of skin malignancy.

They will be expected to be able to deal with all aspects of pigmented related skin cancer and be able to perform sentinel lymph node biopsies, as well as performing lymph node dissections.

They will be expected to run a Mohs service within the Dermatology treatment centre.

They will be expected to run independently operated rapid referral skin cancer clinics at Salisbury Foundation Trust as well as collaborative clinics and operating theatre lists dealing with all aspects of pigmented skin cancers at Southampton hospital.

They will also be expected to take part in twice weekly MDT discussions based at both hospital sites.

Qualifications and Specialist Training

Essential criteria
  • Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a CCT in General Surgery leading to entry onto GMC Specialist Register at date of interview
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

Experience/Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in: Burns Surgery with Burns Fellowship experience (essential)
  • Laser with Fellowship or Post CCT experience (essential)
  • Major Trauma Centre experience (essential)
  • EMSB (or equivalent) Course Certificate (essential)
Desirable criteria
  • EMSB Instructor (desirable but not essential)
  • Trauma Micro-fellowship (desirable but not essential)

Experience/Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems and demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach
  • Knowledge and application of up to date evidence-based practice

Management Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a team, including a multidisciplinary team and to motivate and develop staff
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets
  • Ability to balance individual requirements against those of the department/Directorate
  • Commitment to active clinical governance and learning from errors

Communication skills

  • Demonstrates clarity in written and spoken communication

  • Demonstration of an interest and commitment to teaching

Audit and Research

  • Experience in, and commitment to clinical audit
  • Experience of hosting or recruiting patients to NIHR CRN portfolio research and understanding of GCP in Clinical Research
  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical problems
