Job overview

The Spires Cleft Centre comprises a team of multidisciplinary specialities including cleft and plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, speech therapists, geneticists, psychologists, nurses, orthodontists and restorative dentist as well as admin teams located on both hub sites. The service also works in conjunction with teams in the wider hospital and other allied services within the Trusts e.g. audiology, dental laboratory and medical photography.

The successful candidate will join an established multidisciplinary cleft team providing a service for the Spires Cleft Network on a fixed term contract for a period of 12 months. The post will be based at Salisbury Foundation Trust but surgical duties will also be carried out in Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust if patients require PHDU / PICU facilities and also University Hospital Southampton.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an established multidisciplinary cleft team providing a service for the Spires Cleft Network on a fixed term contract for a period of 12 months. The post will be based at Salisbury Foundation Trust but surgical duties will also be carried out in Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust if patients require PHDU / PICU facilities and also University Hospital Southampton. As a senior member of the MDT the post holder would be expected to show motivational and leadership skills and encourage development of individual team members.

The successful candidate may be required to work off site and to attend network meetings and therefore the use of a vehicle or other form of transport will be necessary to meet these requirements.

Qualifications and Specialist Training

Essential criteria
  • Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a Fellowship in Cleft Surgery
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

Experience / Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in cleft surgery.
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems, demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach
  • Knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based practice.

Management Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a team, including a multidisciplinary team and to motivate and develop staff.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets.
  • Ability to balance individual requirements against those of the department/Directorate.
  • Commitment to active clinical governance and learning from errors.

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates clarity in written and spoken communication.
  • Always considers patients preferences when discussing treatment options.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Demonstration of an interest and commitment to teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and others. Enthusiastic and ability to inspire others.

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Experience in, and commitment to clinical audit.
  • Experience of clinical trials and understanding of GCP in Clinical Research.
  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
