Job overview

The successful applicant will join a busy surgical Skin cancer service operating between Salisbury Foundation Trust and University Hospital Southampton NHS Trusts.

The applicant is expected to have an interest in all aspects of skin malignancy. They will be expected to take part in twice weekly specialist MDTs based at both hospital sites providing plastic surgery support and collaborative working with oncology and the wider SSMDT to deliver the most up to date treatments for skin cancer.

They will be expected to be able to perform all aspects of lymph node surgery in the axilla and groin including sentinel node biopsy and lymph node dissection in addition to complex excision and reconstruction.

They will also be expected to run independently operated urgent suspected skin cancer clinics at Salisbury Foundation Trust as well as collaborative clinics and operating theatre lists dealing with all aspects of skin cancer at Southampton hospital.

They will also be expected to contribute to the day time acute plastic surgery service based at Salisbury District Hospital as part of the agreed job plan.

There may also be the opportunity to develop a further subspecialist interest in one or more of the following areas; Head and Neck surgery, Mohs surgery including post Mohs reconstruction, microsurgery and lower limb trauma.

Main duties of the job

Undertake outpatient sessions in the purpose-built department of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and peripheral hospitals if required.

Undertake operating sessions in the main operating theatres and day surgery unit of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.

Undertake outpatients sessions and operating sessions in the Major Trauma Centre in University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

Undertake required administrative activity to facilitate efficient progress through the pathway of patients under care of the department.

Take pare in the provision of emergency Plastic Surgery on call cover for Salisbury District Hospital on a 1:12 basis.

Share extra on call commitments during colleagues' period of leave.

Contribute to the management of the department and the hospital.

Contribute to the teaching of both undergraduates and trainees.

Undertake an annual job review, appraisal and revalidation.

Actively engage and contribute to the Trust clinical governance and continuous quality improvement.

Strive to develop the Skin service in conjunction with the MDT.

Qualifications with Specialist Training

Essential criteria
  • Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a CCT in Plastic Surgery leading to entry onto GMC Specialist Register at date of interview.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

Experience / Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in Skin Cancer surgery
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in Axilla / Groin / Neck dissection.
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems, demonstrating clear, logical thinking and analytical approach.
  • Experience in managing risk and knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based practice.

Management Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a team, including a multidisciplinary team and to motivate and develop staff.
  • Willing to forge clinical, research and academic links with other organisations.
  • Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively: capacity to organise own workload.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets.
  • Ability to balance individual requirements against those of the department / Directorate.
  • Commitment to active clinical governance and learning from errors.

Communication skills

  • Demonstrates clarity in written and spoken communication.

  • Demonstration of an interest and commitment to teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and others. Enthusiastic and ability to inspire others.

Audit & Research

Essential criteria
  • Experience in, and commitment to clinical audit and research.
  • Experience of hosting or recruiting patients to NIHR CRN portfolio research and understanding of GCP in Clinical Research.
  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
