Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic Dentist to join our existing team, providing Special Care and Urgent Care to meet the needs of adults and children in the local community in Swindon.
You should be innovative, flexible and committed to working in a team environment while providing high standards of clinical care.
The post holder will work 8:30- 17:00, with one hour for lunch, 5 days per week. Our Community Dental Service has 4 dental clinics, within Wiltshire & Swindon. We work in domiciliary settings and within main hospitals therefore use of a motor vehicle is essential. You will join our team to provide care for our service users, those patients with dental needs outside of general practice, and be supported by a Senior Leadership team, offering mentoring and support and experienced line management.
Main duties of the job
GWHFT Community Dental Service provides Urgent Dental Care, Special Care Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry for children with additional needs, and Out of Hours Dentistry to the population of Wiltshire and Swindon. The post holder will use their skills to deliver services within the GWHFT Community Dental Service contract and offer their clinical leadership skills to the teams.
The Service covers Wiltshire and Swindon, and the post holder may be required to deliver services from any of our 4 sites and in domiciliary settings. The role may include participating in general anaesthetic & inhalation sedation lists, and domiciliary care.
This is primarily a clinical post, based at Swindon Health Centre, with some leadership responsibilities, consistent with the competencies of the grade. The post holder should demonstrate sound clinical skills in the treatment of Special Care patients and provide leadership for the local team and across the service. The post holder will have excellent communication skills, and promote a civil and respectful culture, and always be professional.
The post holder will be involved in the mentoring and supervision of Foundation Dentists, who are participating in an 8-month longitudinal scheme of 2 years, covering Community Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Dental Practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Provision of a full range of clinical dental care for people with additional needs who have been referred into the service
To provide dental treatment as required in a range of locations, including domiciliary care, working at acute hospitals if required. This may also involve the provision of treatment under general anaesthesia and sedation.
To promote and maintain patients’ oral health within NHS regulations. To provide dental screening or dental epidemiological surveys of school children and other priority groups if required by the service.
To provide clinical leadership for the local dental team.
To work with the wider clinical team and oral health promotion staff in the provision of high-quality dental care for the patients
To achieve personal performance targets, for both clinical activity and management tasks.
To provide support for Band A dental officers and Foundation Dentists.
To meet Band B Dental Officer competencies as set out within the terms and conditions of the Salaried Dental Service Contract. The post holder will be required to keep and build a portfolio of these competencies, which will form the basis of an annual appraisal.
To actively participate and lead Clinical Governance Programmes as required by the service including audit, peer review and annual performance appraisal. This will also require the post holder to lead agreed work streams for the overall governance programme.
To ensure that they meet the standards for Dental Professionals as required by the General Dental Council this will include demonstration of required CPD
Patient Care
In addition to the above, the post holder should ensure that Estimates are printed for all Band 2 & Band 3 courses of treatment (COT)
Budget Responsibilities
· To work with the Specialist in Special Care Dentistry/Assistant Clinical Director and Clinical Director to ensure effective use of resources in the service area.
· Staff should ensure that completed courses of treatment (COT) are closed within 1 month of completion to enable transmission to BSA within that calendar month.
· All staff must ensure they use resources in a manner consistent with organisational objectives and policies, ensuring that resources are realistic, justified and of clear benefit to the organisation.
Responsibilities for People or Training
· Provide clinical support for Band A dentists and Foundation Dentists, and work collaboratively with the Specialist in Special Care Dentistry.
· Day-to-day supervision of Dental Nurses in a defined clinical area, in association with the Dental Nurse Team Manager.
· Act as a role model for your designated area.
· Liaise with Dental Senior Leadership Team to ensure maintenance of high standards within the team
· Participation in Policy Working Groups for Sedation, Best interests and Consent, Safeguarding, Domiciliary Care and Audit.
Other Factors
· Post holder will be required to travel throughout Wiltshire, must be a car driver with access to a motor vehicle.
· Regular VDU usage
