Job overview

To undertake a range of care duties for patients and provide support functions within the Outpatient Department under the supervision of a Registered Midwife.

To record patient information and report patient condition to a Registered Midwife.

To undertake a full range of manual, housekeeping and clerical duties as required.

To maintain a personal and professional development.

Participate in the effective utilisation of resources available to the service.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist the Midwife in delivering a high standard of holistic patient care, ensuring that the patients dignity and equality is maintained at all times in line with organisational requirements.
  • Act as a chaperone for patients prior to, during and following clinical procedures or examinations.
  • Following appropriate training measure patient’s weight/height and  reporting results to Registered Midwife in charge.
  • Check accuracy of patient demographic details on attendance at clinic. Where changes are identified, inform the Midwife in Charge and Clinic clerk in order that records can be updated.
  • Taking accurate telephone messages.
    • Laboratory results should always be read back to the technician who will confirm that it is correct.
    • Being aware of the danger of divulging information to a caller and knowing when to refer the call to a senior member of staff.
  • Prepare general clinic area for receiving patients by ensuring area is generally clean and tidy – assist in maintaining the standards in the clinical area and report any untidiness/clutter to the appropriate person.
  • Contribute and assist in moving and handling of individuals ensuring that organisational guidelines and policies are met.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Communicate basic information to patients and their carers maintaining confidentiality, dignity and respect.
