Clinical Teaching Fellow Emergency Medicine

This exciting post working in Emergency and Acute Care (EAC) is ideal for a doctor or ACP with at least 6 months experience in Emergency Medicine, seeking to further their career. It would be particularly suited for a trainee between core medical and higher training, or a higher specialist trainee/senior ACP with an interest in Medical Education.

This post offers a combination of teaching and clinical activity. The post holder will undertake three days of undergraduate medical teaching in the acute care setting and two days of clinical activity per week in the Emergency Department. This is a 24-month position.

Provide supervised “shop floor” teaching for medical students in the Emergency Department and Acute Medicine Wards.

Facilitate small group teaching and clinical skills training, including simulation exercises using Simulated Patients (SPs).

Undertake Workplace Based Assessments (WBAs), Directly Observed Procedural Skills (DOPs), and Case-Based Discussions (CBDs).

Support students in their critical analysis of ‘patient journeys’.

Contribute to the formal examination of students, including assessing OSCEs and writing exam questions.

Participate in one-to-one tutoring of students, including those struggling and those re-sitting their exams.

Support inter-professional training for medical students in the ED.

Help to train and develop a wider faculty for critical illness teaching, including other healthcare professionals.

Work closely with the multi-disciplinary, multi-professional team in EAC to support efficient and effective inter-professional education.

Contribute to clinical activity by undertaking work on the 'shopfloor' for 2 days per week.

Professional Registration:

The post holder must have full registration with the GMC/NMC or equivalent. It is no longer a requirement of employment within the NHS that medical staff be registered with a medical insurance organisation. Should you wish to maintain registration with such an organisation, this is entirely your own choice.

Personal Professional Development & Educational Research:

Undertake the MMedEd Course at the University of Nottingham or at another Higher Education Institution during the tenure of this post, 50% of the costs will need to be met by the successful applicant and 50% by the Trust for all UK applicants.

Carry out relevant educational research as appropriate.

Take an active part in training sessions run by UMED.

To represent the Department where appropriate in University exam and standard setting meetings and other associated courses

There will be opportunities throughout the year to present at local, regional and national conferences.  The NUH UMED runs its own conference on an annual basis and encourages staff to present good practice initiatives as well as supporting staff to attend regional and national conferences, such as ASME and ASPiH.

Undergraduate Teaching:

The post will have a minimum of 3 days (6 sessions) of teaching that will be made up of the following activities.

5 sessions (half days) per week of ‘shop floor teaching’, clinical simulations, small group teaching, patient workshops and WBPA & DOPs assessments 

1 sessions per week of office work – planning /evaluation and mentoring students. 

Interspersed with the above outline will be teaching on other specific teaching days and commitment to exam-orientated activities.

Critical Illness Attachment:

From October to February, there will be cohorts of students based in the ED as part of the 4-week CIA in their final year. The focus for their time in ED will be the recognition and management of patients who are or have the potential to be critically ill. This will be in the context of team and inter-professional working.

The other half of the CIA will be based in Theatres and Critical Care areas. During the attachment, there will be an introductory and a final formative Students will also undertake a day in the Trent Simulation Centre and ILS days.

Foundation for Practice:

The FFP course for 3rd year students is the first full-time clinical attachment for medical students, which runs from February to October. There are 5 blocks of 6 weeks. The post holder will support with the junior medicine and junior surgery weeks, focusing on delivering and assessing acute medical knowledge and skills.

Early Clinical Experience:

From November to May 1st and 2nd Year students visit the hospital to practise basic skills in history taking and examination. The post holder will support and supervise these students in the Emergency Department and other wards throughout the Trust.

Clinical Duties:

The clinical duties of this post will predominantly take place in the Emergency Department. These duties will be assigned based on a comprehensive evaluation of the post holder's clinical experience.
