Reports to: Senior phlebotomist Accountable to: Deputy and Service Manager Job Title: Date Finalised: Date of review: Page 2 Job Description Job Summary The post holder will be responsible for: • The taking of routine and urgent venous blood samples from patients attending outpatient clinics and in inpatient wards ensuring that specimens are taken in a manner that does not cause anxiety to the patient • Identification of all patients to be verified and samples taken in accordance with Trust Policies ensuring any special instructions have been followed such as fasting and considering any allergies. It is vitally important that patients are identified correctly and samples labelled appropriately to avoid any potential errors in treatment by a clinician acting on incorrect information. • The post holder will carry out the associated procedures of specimen collection and sample handling to ensure timely high quality blood samples are received appropriate for the test required ensuring that any special instructions such as time sensitive light and temperature guidance is followed. Failure to ensure samples are handled correctly can result in a failed sample and a patient having to be retested. • Undertake specific duties involving direct and indirect care as identified by the needs of the service. This may include performing Electrocardiogram tests (ECG’s) for medical staff and Specialist practitioners to interpret. Job Title: Date Finalised: Date of review: Page 3 • Blood samples required will be taken only as a result of an appropriately completed request from a Clinician. • The work will be carried out in accordance with the detailed training programme given on commencement of service. • Adherence to ANTT (Aseptic Non Touch Technique) practise at all times. • To be involved in an annual appraisal with their Senior Phlebotomist • Take responsibility for undertaking own mandatory training and updates as required • Demonstrating venepuncture practice and processes to new and less experienced colleagues. Staff will support new staff by providing training advice and mentoring in readiness for senior colleagues to assess competence and complete LCAT assessment. Scope The phlebotomy team provides a service to inpatients and outpatients at all three UHL hospital sites for various wards and clinics 7 days a week 365 days a year. On average there are between 300 and 500 patients seen across the three sites per day. All phlebotomy areas are demanding and challenging working environments where meeting service standards is a constant Job Title: Date Finalised: Date of review: Page 4 challenge. All staff are expected to carry out duties consistent with individual patient/ user wishes maintaining privacy dignity and recognising cultural diversity and needs. Patients can present with additional needs which can include needle phobia and those prone to fainting which can result in exposure to urine and vomit. Staff need to deal with patients who may be confused distressed or agitated in a caring understanding way offering the highest quality service ensuring that they are the patient advocate at all times and policies for vulnerable adults are always followed. This role does involve frequent walking standing and bending for prolonged periods of time. The post holder will be required to rotate between the service’s various teams and may be called upon to work at one of the other UHL sites. The post holder will be responsible for covering bank holidays on a rotational basis across all three UHL sites. Flexibility to cover for unexpected absences will sometimes be required. The post holder will undertake specific duties as delegated under the direction and supervision of the senior members of staff (Senior Phlebotomist and Managers). KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS The post holder will be required to develop close working relationships with:  Clinicians managers and staff who use the Service directly or indirectly.  The Service Manager  The Phlebotomy Manager  The Senior Phlebotomists  In addition the post holder will be required to liaise and communicate effectively with:  The Public – patients/ relatives and carers  Other Health professionals Job Title: Date Finalised: Date of review: Page 6 KEY RESULT AREAS Service Delivery & Development  To undertake the work as directed by the senior phlebotomist and ensure there is a degree of flexibility to provide services to all adult (16+) patients across the Trust.  Undertake only those duties and delegated tasks and treatments within own limitations level of competence skill and training.  Complete all mandatory training in a timely manner.  To partake in annual appraisal and demonstrate actions to achieving agreed personal development plans and objectives.  Ensuring that Team and departmental key performance indicators are achieved.  Ensure stock rotation and adherence to maintaining sterility of stock.  Responsibility for ensuring that all equipment is in suitable working order and escalating and reporting if it is not.  To work autonomously in a clinical environment from a pre-allocated worklist on wards using the relevant Trust IT systems proficiently  To work on a one to one basis with patients both on wards and in an outpatient setting often without direct supervision (supervisory staff are available in person until 2:30pm) however there is telephone access to senior staff if required at all times the service is operational  Following training and LCAT assessment staff are aware that there are other venepuncture sites that can be used for blood taking however UHL CSI phlebotomists are only expected and trained to take blood from the arm or back of the patient’s hand. Staff will also learn the importance of using the appropriate site for patients with additional complexities such as a Cannula a Central Line or Fistulas.
