Job overview

Radiotherapy is important in the treatment of cancer. Here at Peterborough City Hospital, we have been delivering radiotherapy since the hospital opened in 2010.

 This senior role involves working as part of a team of therapeutic radiographers providing a highly specialist clinical and technical service and to be involved in the total care of patients undergoing Radiotherapy treatment.   

The Senior Therapeutic Radiographer will critically evaluate all aspects of the patient pathway to facilitate optimal treatment delivery and to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the designated working area that is allocated on a rotational basis.  Daily, they will provide support and information to the cancer patient and their carers maintaining a high level of patient care, communicating complex and delicate information with tact and sensitivity

 The Senior Therapeutic Radiographer works closely with a multi-professional team of clinical oncologists, physicists, radiographers, technicians, clerical staff and others providing specialist knowledge, skills and expertise to the department.

Main duties of the job

Be an accountable professional acting in the best interests of patients, putting them first and providing complex clinical care that is evidence-based, person-centred, safe, and compassionate. Use existing knowledge and expertise and enhanced levels of clinical judgement to independently undertake complex and holistic assessments.

Act independently to plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate complex care using   enhanced clinical assessments, diagnostics, and interventions. Act as an expert resource within their own organisation and for external agencies.

Develop, deliver and evaluate education and training opportunities for others within own scope of practice. Communicate effectively in challenging environments and situations with patients, their families/carers and the multi-disciplinary team. 

Promote and encourage innovative clinical practice to support a culture of excellence within the wider health and care team. Lead and manage unpredictable and unplanned clinical situations. Participate in resource management, strategic service development, planning and service improvement. 

Lead, monitor, develop and appraise staff and learners

  • Degree or DCR(T) in radiotherapy
  • Has HCPC registration ( or has applied for registration)
