Our Department of Medicine manages the needs of Northland’s unique demographics, and with the expansion of our team we are looking for consultants to join us. We have multiple positions available and would consider permanent or fixed-term options – contact us to learn more!

We are looking for physicians to provide medical services within Northland; these are a combination of new and replacement roles and any subspecialty interest would be considered.

Existing specialties include:

• General and Acute medicine
• Rheumatology
• Respiratory
• Gastroenterology including a visiting hepatologist
• Neurology
• Cardiology
• Infectious Disease
• Endocrinology and diabetes
• Healthcare of the elderly
• Maternal Medicine
• Oncology and Haematology
• Renal medicine

We have several new facilities including an assessment unit, endoscopy and cardiac catheter suite with the agreed funding for a new hospital which is currently in the planning stage. The participants roles will be divided into an off-ward role 66% of the time where elective work is undertaken and on wards 33% of the time managing inpatients. The on-call rota means working approximately 6 weekends a year with a rostered day off after weekends.

Our department has a family feel with a positive culture, although a busy and challenging environment everyone looks after each other and has a real passion for what they do and why they do it. Teaching and mentoring our 28 medical registrars are an important part of our work.  We want candidates who are team players committed to improving and developing services to meet the population need with a passion for the delivery of equitable healthcare.

Whangārei Hospital is the largest hospital in Northland providing secondary care services, supported by three regional hospitals in Kaitaia; Kawakawa, and Dargaville. Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres with a growing population of more than 190,000. The Department of Medicine provides acute medicine care; as well as outpatient/ non-acute/ elective inpatient care to the Northland community.
