Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Core 24 Psychiatric Liaison Service serving the localities of Northumberland and North Tyneside. You will be based at Northumberland Specialist Emergency Care Hospital with outreach to base DGH sites in Hexham, Wansbeck and North Tyneside, all provided by Northumbria Acute Trust. The MDT has expanded in recent years to include a Nurse Consultant, Clinical nurse specialist and NMP, and a psychologist. There is also specialist pharmacy input as well as team of Band 6 assessors.
Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of mental health, learning disability and neurological care services across the North East and North Cumbria. Northumberland is the northernmost county in England, bordering Scotland to the north, Cumbria to the west, County Durham to the south and the North Sea coastline to the east. Home to Alnwick castle, Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland National Park. There are 8 market towns and many attractive villages. The coastline has many beautiful beaches and is recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty. For travel further afield there are good road links by the A19 and A1. The main East Coast Rail Line provides rapid links to both London and Edinburgh.
Main duties of the job
- Attending Team clinical meetings and providing Senior clinical Leadership
- Assessing Liaison Cases in the acute hospital setting
- Interfacing and developing links with community discharge pathways
- Attending complex-case MDT’s within the acute hospital setting and liaising with CRHT, Inpatient and specialist services and community services as required
- Providing consultative support to the Liaison MDT, psychiatry trainees and general hospital staff
- Developing a program to implement educational/ staff development interventions for the acute/ general hospital staff
- Given that this is a developing service, the post holder will be expected to be flexible and willing to negotiate duties.
- Providing RC duties to patients detained to Northumbria Acute Trust
- Contribute to Service Development through QI activities as part of the Clinical leadership team.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
- Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
- Approved Clinician Status
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
- Has undergone training in educational supervision
- Has undergone training in appraisal
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry
- Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation
Desirable criteria
- An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of multidisciplinary team working
- Wide clinical experience in general adult psychiatry in different clinical settings
- Experience of Clinical Audit
Desirable criteria
- Experience in multiagency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
