Lead Pharmacist Adv Therapy Investigational Medicinal Products (ATIMP)

Band 8b

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

Are you ready to lead the future of advanced therapies in a newly built dedicated ATIMP facility? We are seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking Lead Pharmacist for Advanced Therapy Investigational Medicinal Products (ATIMP) to drive, shape and expand our ATIMP service across Southampton General Hospital and Adanac Park.

You will lead a specialist pharmacy team preparing and delivering cutting-edge cell and gene therapies, ensuring patients receive timely, safe, and high-quality advanced treatments. Acting as the Accountable Pharmacist, you will oversee quality systems, compliance, and innovative clinical trial delivery, while collaborating with research and clinical teams to bring new therapies into practice.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the strategic direction of ATIMP services, working closely with the Head of Production and research teams to maximise the potential of our purpose-built facility. You will develop staff, deliver specialist teaching locally and nationally, and represent pharmacy within Trust and national ATMP networks.

If you are passionate about advanced therapies, committed to patient-focused innovation, and ready to take the next step in your pharmacy leadership journey, we would love to hear from you.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Act as Accountable Pharmacist, overseeing all ATIMP quality systems, documentation, and regulatory compliance, ensuring national and EU standards are met.

Drive innovation by working with R&D and clinical trials teams to plan, develop and implement cutting-edge ATIMP trials within the Trust.

Provide expert leadership and specialist advice on ATIMP handling, storage, and production, influencing practice across pharmacy, medical and nursing teams.

Manage and develop a skilled ATIMP pharmacy team, planning and delivering training, supporting staff progression and maintaining high performance.

Collaborate with the Head of Production to set strategic direction for ATIMP services, maximising the capabilities of our purpose-built facility to expand trial delivery.

Oversee ATIMP budgets, identifying opportunities for cost savings and income generation through trial provision and efficient service models.

Represent pharmacy on the Trust ATMP Advisory Committee and national SPS ATMP groups, ensuring our service is aligned with national best practice.

Deliver local and national teaching on ATIMP management and production, sharing expertise to support safe, advanced therapy delivery across the NHS.

Champion quality and safety, investigating and reporting incidents, and ensuring robust systems for continuous improvement in ATIMP preparation.
