Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Acute Medicine service works closely with the Emergency Department (ED) and with other Specialist Medicine services. The Acute Medicine service has a fast turnover of patients; our usual length of stay is around 1.5 days, which is due to twice daily consultant input into patient care, great support from imaging and diagnostics, a multidisciplinary approach to patient care (delivered by the Frailty team) and an excellent pharmacy team. In addition, there is daily input from consultant led specialties such as gastroenterology, hepatology, frailty, respiratory, infectious diseases, endocrinology and psychiatry for patients who require further input.

The post holder is expected to help deliver consultant led care to all patients managed by the Acute Medicine team regardless of their location. The care of medical patients outlying on non-medical wards during the winter months is shared between the different firm-based teams.

Regular teaching and training of under-graduate and post-graduate students is firmly embedded within the working routine of the Acute Medicine team and the post holder will be expected to take part in this.

A team of consultant physicians from various medical specialties take part in the Acute Medicine rota and provide daily support and specialist opinions to patients under Acute Medicine, including gastroenterology, infectious disease, respiratory, neurology, endocrinology, medicine for the elderly and other specialties.
