Job overview
The portering department transfers patients, goods and any other items around the trust in a prompt, professional and efficient manner. Porters respond to requests for their services as quickly as possible in order to provide a positive patient experience in a safe professional manner and first-class service that epitomises the Christie reputation.
This is a position that includes a whole spectrum of duties, from showing compassion and care for patients and relatives to physically demanding tasks such as moving and storing gas cylinders or furniture. A main component of the position is the collection, transportation and disposal of waste materials including clinical waste from wards and theatres.
The successful applicant will be on the front line and will be expected to be always polite and respectable.
This is a permanent contract of 37.5 hours per week. This will be Mon-Fri 1200-2000.
Main duties of the job
To transfer all patients throughout the trust estate in a prompt, professional and efficient manner as requested using appropriate means of transport, using the portering management software TeleTracking.
To collect, transport and dispose of waste materials including clinical waste from wards and theatres, following Trust guidelines on waste management at all times.
The collection of specimens from wards/depts. and delivery to the laboratories in a prompt, professional and efficient manner using the portering management software TeleTracking – training for which will be provided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The collection of blood products from the blood room and delivery to wards/depts. in a prompt, professional and efficient manner as per blood products transfusion training and procedures.
To collect and transport patients from all areas of the site using a variety of wheeled equipment, e.g. wheelchairs, trollies, beds.
The movement of deceased patients from the wards/depts. to the Mortuary in a prompt, professional and efficient manner always maintaining the respect and dignity of the patient.
To carry the emergency Alertive/Allocate response device as a part of the trust cardiac arrest team that attends when a patient has a cardiac arrest and ensure that any equipment required by clinical colleagues is available where it is required as soon as possible and to offer any assistance needed to clinical colleagues.
The movement of furniture and similar items around the trust.
The delivery of clean linen and collection of dirty linen.
The removal of waste furniture and electrical items for disposal.
The safe delivery, storage, and correct segregation of full/empty medical gas cylinders.
The movement of clinical equipment (such as pumps) to and from wards/departments as required in a prompt, professional and efficient manner.
The movement of beds and mattresses as required to and from wards/departments and the bed store.
The delivery of items from Stores to the various wards and departments when required.
The delivery of drugs from Pharmacy to wards/depts. in a prompt, professional and efficient manner ensuring that all drug deliveries are handed to ward/dept. staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
