Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to work within the community in West Northumberland, a stunning rural geographical area of outstanding beauty, yet within close proximity to the vibrant and cultural city of Newcastle upon Tyne with its excellent transport links.
The post is a community role, in both community treatment team and memory clinic settings, and involves seeing patients in outpatient clinics, care homes and domiciliary visits, covering the more central West Northumberland area including the towns of Hexham, Prudhoe and Ponteland. You will work alongside another full time consultant psychiatrist, and lead a well established multidisciplinary team. There are also close working relationships with local GP surgeries in the area.
This is an 8PA post, which can be worked over 4 days or more flexibly. There may be the opportunity for the successful candidate to take on additional PAs within CNTW trust to make the post up to a full time equivalent post, depending on availability of sessions and experience of the successful applicant.
The post has become available due to the departure of the existing postholder.

Main duties of the job
- The assessment, diagnosis, formulation and treatment of patients referred to the Northumberland Memory Service (NMS) and Community Treatment Team (CTT) in the West Northumberland Older Adult Teams. On completion of assessment, advice on diagnosis and treatment within the team and to external service providers.
- Medical leadership, consultation, advice and guidance within the NMS and CTT ensuring that care and treatment are safe, effective efficient and within national guidelines.
- The training and supervision of colleagues including medical students and other allied professionals, and liaison and consultation with hospital doctors and primary care clinicians on diagnosis, treatment and management of patients.
- Assessment and making recommendations under the Mental Health Act and to provide urgent assessments.
- Working with the MDT to ensure that patients receive an appropriate level of physical health monitoring and care.
- Working in a flexible manner as dictated by clinical need within the terms of the job plan and contract.
- Completion of administrative tasks defined in the job plan as necessary to ensure patient safety and the fulfilment of the clinical role.
- Participation in the teaching and education of medical students
- Participation in regular job planning and appraisal as per trust requirements.
- Participation in clinical governance activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a substantive Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist post where you will provide Senior Medical input into the Northumberland Memory Service (NMS) and Community Treatment Team (CTT) in the West Northumberland locality covering the older adult population. The post will be based at the Fairnington Centre, Corbridge Road, Hexham, Northumberland, NE46 1QJ. The locality is divided geographically between the post holder and another full time Consultant colleague, with this post covering the inner West. This includes the towns of Ponteland, Prudhoe, Corbridge, and part of Hexham as defined by GP practice.
The post is a replacement post following the departure of the previous incumbent.
The Trust is constantly seeking to improve its services and to respond to changes in health care need and demand. The post holder should be flexible and open to changes that enhance patient care and will be expected to play a supporting role in developing these services. This job description may be amended in the light of changes to service delivery. The process for this will be via mutual agreement wherever possible and will adhere to the Trust Job Planning Policy, a copy of which can be made available on request.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
- Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
- Approved Clinician Status
Desirable criteria
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
- Has undergone training in educational supervision
- Has undergone training in appraisal
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry
- Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation
Desirable criteria
- An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of multidisciplinary team working
- Wide clinical experience in general adult psychiatry in different clinical settings
- Experience of Clinical Audit.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in multiagency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
