Main duties of the job
The Sustainability Manager will play an integral role in shaping, measuring and influencing the Trust’s performance across all aspects of sustainability and environmental management. Supporting the Head of Sustainability and working with impact across clinical and operational teams, the post holder will be the key point of contact at UHS for all sustainability topics, reporting progress against internal and external metrics, engaging with staff at all levels and supporting the successful delivery of the Trust Green Plan.
The post holder will play an instrumental role in delivering the Trust’s vision and Green Plan objectives to be a Net Zero Carbon hospital by 2040 for UHS’s NHS Footprint and 2045 for UHS’s NHS Footprint Plus. The post holder will work across the whole Trust (as well as co-ordinating with the ICB and neighbouring Trusts) to support the Head of Sustainability and the Executive Board in delivering its sustainability vision and ensuring action on sustainability is embedded throughout the Trust, in line with NHS Net Zero guidance and requirements.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience delivering successful sustainability initiatives in complex organisations, with a passion for sustainability and competence across topics.
- A detailed, up-to-date understanding of associated legislation and policy, including NHS-specific policy requirements, sector trends and the landscape for associated funding applications.
- Skills in engaging, enabling and supporting behaviour change, working across teams to develop sustainable networks that lead to measurable impact.
- The tenacity to balance a wide range of projects, and support project teams in delivering positive sustainability actions that can be accurately measured, reported and replicated at scale.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree or equivalent level experience.
- Masters degree level in an environmental, management or sustainability-related subject, or with relevant equivalent experience.
- Highly developed specialist knowledge across the range of environmental and sustainability practices, underpinned by relevant practical experience
- Experience in liaising and negotiating with stakeholders internally and externally and working across organisations to influence strategies, policies, and behaviour.
- Providing operational guidance and support on a broad range of sustainability related areas, such as: sustainable models of care, sustainable procurement, waste management, carbon foot printing, climate change adaptation, greenspace and biodiversity, sustainable transport and active travel.
- Knowledge of Government policy, legislation and regulation, and public body duties in climate change and sustainability.
- Numerate, literate and practical, with excellent computer and analytical skills and able to use internet and content management systems.
Desirable criteria
- Membership of relevant professional body such as the Institute of Sustainability & Environmental Professionals (ISEP, previously IEMA) or equivalent.
- Prince 2 Practitioner Qualified – or similar project management or Quality Improvement (QI) qualification.
- Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD)
- A deep understanding of NHS policies, procedures and structures, with a particular focus on sustainability and environmental requirements.
- Knowledge of operational planning techniques including option appraisal, feasibility studies and business case preparation.
- Knowledge of performance management, reporting and benchmarking initiatives.
- Knowledge of healthcare estate planning and management.
