Senior Clinical Coder

Band 5

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Coding department at University Hospital Southampton for an ACC qualified clinical coder. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm and motivation to join our friendly team, to help provide high quality coded data for the Trust.

As an Accredited Clinical Coder, you will have experience of coding a variety of specialties that occur within an acute NHS organisation. You will have a flexible and adaptable approach to work and strive to create accurate clinically coded data, embracing the national clinical coding standards, rules, and conventions, to ensure the Trust data is sufficiently robust.

You will work closely with the Clinical Coding Team Leaders and at times support the Trainee Clinical Coders. Being part of the Data & Analytics Team, you may have opportunities to work with Analysts and Developers to find new ways to continually improve and develop tools to enhance the service we provide.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide high quality and timely coded clinical data, by following the national clinical coding rules and conventions. It is essential to ensure the data is accurate and complete to meet Trust deadlines.

Therefore, you must possess an exceptional attention to detail, be capable of organising your own workload and be able to work under pressure to ensure these strict monthly departmental and national deadlines are met.

You will have a proven record of working in a team and contributing to the team's success and be able to effectively communicate with all relevant healthcare professions.
