West London NHS Trust  provides a full range of mental health, community  and physical healthcare services for children, adults and older people living in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

Job overview

To effectively obtain the requested blood samples from referred patients within their usual place of residence. Ensuring correct procedures are followed including confirmation of the identity of the patient and the clear labelling and delivery of collected samples to the identified pathology laboratory.

The role covers all areas within the London Borough of Ealing and the post holder will need to therefore hold a full driving licence to enable you to legally drive one of the team pool vehicles. In the event of not holding a driving licence access to an assisted pedal bike or other form of motorised transport is required.

Main duties of the job

·         The collection of requested blood samples from patients, adhering to universal precautions and agreed service standards and procedures, including the correct identification of patients.

 

·       To ensure the timely outcome of patient visits on the Trust clinical information system (Currently Systm one).

 

·     To carry out duties in a way that ensures a patient centred approach that delivers an efficient service with a high level of patient satisfaction; ensuring the patient is treated with dignity and respect at all times.

 

·    To ensure that all specimens are safely and correctly labelled, stored and packaged for transportation to the specified laboratory, in line with trust policy.

 

· To ensure effective communication with team members, medical and nursing staff as necessary.

 

·     To undertake the designated domiciliary visits for patients that are unable to attend, GP or Outpatients for their blood test as required by GPs and community Nurses.

 

·     To have a sound understanding of the health and safety aspects, including infection control, including the collection, storage, and transportation of specimens.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • A recognised certification in Phlebotomy (this can be demonstrated by attendance certificates from required phlebotomy training / study days and competency certificates)
  • GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Must have experience of working within a Phlebotomy team or having phlebotomy as part of practice i.e. as part of another healthcare role.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to prioritise your allocated workload
  • Knowledge of the needs of multicultural communities or the wiliness to learn.

  • To keep up to date with any changes to practice Have the commitment to ensure that all Mandatory & Statutory training (MAST) is kept up to date as required.
