Job overview

This is a Community General Adult Specialty Doctor post with East Gateshead Community Treatment Team. The Community Mental Health team (CMHT) is positioned in Secondary Care and has a pivotal role in directly delivering specialist community mental health services beside offering an interface with Primary care, Access Services and Specialist Services such as Perinatal Mental Health, Eating Disorders, Early Intervention in Psychosis and Rehabilitation Services and many other specialist services.

The post holder will find themselves well supported, with opportunities for ongoing professional development and collaborative work.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time working age adult substantive Specialty Doctor post in East Gateshead Community Treatment Team which works closely with the West Gateshead Community Treatment Team. You will provide medical input into a Community Treatment Team working with 2 other consultants, a Nurse consultant working across both teams, and a Nurse Specialist. This team is covering the adult population in the East of Gateshead.

The post-holder is expected to:

-             Work effectively with the multidisciplinary community team and in-patient teams.

-             Promote the safety and well-being of the patients we serve.

-             To respect the rights and the dignity of patients.

-             To consider the individual and cultural needs of patients and

-             To work with families and carers in the best interest of the patient (in line with the Trust Carers’ Charter).

The Community Mental Health Team provides an assessment and treatment service for people who are experiencing difficulty with their mental health based on episodic model of care. The CMHT works closely with the local Crisis Team, Liaison service and Inpatient services to ensure safe and timely transitions when required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As SAS Doctor working in the Community Mental Health Team for East Gateshead, you will have responsibility for the provision of safe and effective evidence-based care and treatment.

You are expected to share the vision of integrated and multi-disciplinary work and actively engage in supporting service development.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Full Registration with the GMC (or eligible to become registered) with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Has undergone training in educational supervision
  • Has undergone training in appraisal
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge in the field of psychiatry
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Good knowledge of clinical risk management
  • Good knowledge of evidence based strategies for management of psychiatric disorder
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 4 years full-time postgraduate training including 2 years work experience in psychiatry
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Wide clinical experience in psychiatry in different clinical settings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in multi agency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
  • Experience in service management or development
  • Experience of clinical audit

  • High level of clinical skills
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders
