Are you interested in working in an Ambulance environment and achieving a nationally recognised qualification? You can ‘earn while you learn’ whilst training to be an Emergency Medical Technician.

The Trust are recruiting to our apprenticeship programme for Emergency Medical Technicians for 2027. Please see the attached sector preference form for locations.

Upon joining the Trust, staff will be paid based on a Band 4 NHS training rate of pay for a two-year apprenticeship, starting salary will be £25,272 (based on 26/27 NHS pay scales). Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you will be eligible to move onto a full Emergency Medical Technician contract of employment. The salary for this will be Band 4 which is £28,392 - £31,157 per annum plus an appropriate unsocial hour’s payment under section 2 for Agenda for Change terms and conditions.

Main duties of the job

As an apprentice, you will work alongside other EMT staff and Paramedics initiating and delivering appropriate care and effective treatment to patients in a pre-hospital environment.

During your apprenticeship you will be applying appropriate skills and knowledge to safely provide care for patients, working within the scope of practice for the role.

You will benefit from dedicated educational and clinical support from your Educational Practitioners, managers and crew, to develop you through your apprenticeship programme to successful completion.

We will aim to –

  • Run a driving licence check with DVLA. This is to check if you hold at least a provisional C1 on your licence. This is a requirement at the application stage
  • A qualifications check will also be completed at the application stage.
  • Complete the application shortlisting by 27.07.2026. You will receive notification by this date on your application
  • Invite those that have been shortlisted to an interview to take place on 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd August. These dates may differ depending on numbers. Please note there will now be TWO parts of the interview day. You will complete a group assessment then an individual professional discussion. 
  • Driving Assessments will be from 24th August.

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.
We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs including Mathematics, English (language or literature) and a Science at Grade 4-9 or equivalent. Or Candidates with relevant healthcare experience and GCSEs in Mathematics and English (language or literature) at Grade 4-9 or above, or equivalent will be considered

  • Hold a valid UK Driving License (No more than 3 endorsement points. In exceptional circumstances a maximum of 6 points may be considered)
