Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Cardiologists with a specialist interest in Heart Failure, to join the Cardiology department at UHNM for 6 months.

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver General Cardiology and Heart Failure clinical services . The candidate will be expected to have substantial experience in clinical cardiology. An academic profile is desirable and  participate in the general, cardiology on call rota, currently 1:11. 

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting time to join the cardiac team at UHNM and to develop the service for a large population, at a time of great opportunities to improve care. The appointee will be joining a team of supportive colleagues including 4 heart failure consultants, 9 EP/device consultants, 3 imaging consultants, 11 structural and coronary intervention consultants and 2 inherited cardiac conditions consultants, the unit also has 1 academic consultant post attached to Keele University.  

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality specialist service within the Trust, working collaboratively with Consultant colleagues and taking responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients referred to the specialty.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical competence and an ability to communicate that competence to patients, other clinicians, practitioners, and junior staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a full-time post for a Locum Consultant Cardiologist for 6 months, at University Hospitals North Midlands. Clinical duties for this role include:

 

Clinical Duties: General Cardiology & Heart Failure

Diagnosis and treatment of ward and outpatients in cardiology. Regular ward rounds on the cardiology wards.

Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge allowing for all proper delegation to and training of your staff.

To see ward consults/referrals when on call.

Two outpatient clinics per week

On call commitment for cardiology

This role is to help to deliver and progress the heart failure care for patients. The post will help support the ambulatory heart failure unit and to support the development of a virtual ward for our heart failure patients. The post holder will also be required to work closely with our community team and have regular MDT with them.

 

The appointee will be expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the running of his/her clinical work. There will be full secretarial support and the provision of fully equipped office and IT facilities. The appointee will be expected to take a full part in professional activities required for revalidation including clinical audit. All these activities are designated as “supporting activities” on the job plan below.

The appointee will be expected to spend 10 Programmed Activities (average 4 hour sessions) per week as laid out in the provisional job plan based on Direct Patient Care and this will include work relating to prevention, emergency work (including on call), operating sessions including pre- and post-operative care, ward rounds, outpatient activities, clinical diagnostic work, other patient treatment, public health duties, multi-disciplinary meetings and administration relating to the above.  Timetables may be changed in the future to meet the changing needs of the Directorate and the successful candidate could be asked to take on additional work in general cardiology depending on their skill set - this will attract additional PAs.

  • Experience of research Publications, Presentations or Previous Audits
  • Willing to participate in audit programmes

  • ICH-GCP certificate, Recruitment to clinical trials Evidence of continuing research

Management and Administrative Experience:

Essential criteria
  • Good leadership skills, communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership training and experience
  • Evidence of implementing change within a department/service
  • Willingness to undertake a leadership role

Personal Circumstances:

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work flexibly
  • Ability and means to meet the travel requirements of the post
  • To be accessible by telephone for on call duties
Desirable criteria
  • Calm under pressure

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
  • MRCP UK or equivalent
  • Accreditation by The British Society of Echocardiography, or equivalent ( such as EACVI)
Desirable criteria
  • Other higher degree (PhD, Masters)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post CCT training in devices
  • Significant sub-specialty training in cardiac Imaging
  • General management of patients with cardiac conditions
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies or teams in a hospital environment.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies or teams in a hospital environment
