An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Mortuary Assistant to join the Bradford Royal Infirmary Mortuary service.

The successful candidate will be involved in the day-to-day workings in the mortuary at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust; this includes assisting with and undertaking efficient and effective body identification, registration and release procedures of the deceased from the mortuary.

The job holder will be required to liaise with a wide number of people from both within and outside of the Trust including Nursing and Medical staff, Bereavement Teams, Coroner’s Officer’s, Funeral Directors and on occasions bereaved relatives

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be involved in the safe and effective day to day working within the Mortuary. 

Undertake identification, registration and release procedures including trimonthly fetal burials, transfer of histology specimens, releasing to coroner’s and funeral directors 

Assist in the preparation of fetal and maternal specimens for buriel 

Ensure that any visitors to the mortuary area are treated in a sympathetic and caring manner, taking into account their cultural and religious requirements.

Liaise and communicate with various individuals and organisations concerned with the work of the mortuary both within and outside the Trust.  

To help ensure that the mortuary is at all times secure and access is restricted to authorised personnel.

To assist with equipment maintenance and report any faults or repairs required as necessary to the Mortuary Manager.

To report all incidents using the Trusts incident reporting system; IRIS. 

Responsible for the accuracy of data ensuring electronic and manual records are maintained, including the mortuary shared database; identification details of deceased, length of stay, funeral directors and plans for release.   

Ensure that the day to day work of the mortuary is conducted in an efficient and professional manner; ensuring the workload is within the limits of the job role.

Assist with the preparation of the deceased prior to viewing and accompany relatives during viewings.

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work safely and effectively under pressure, without compromising the quality of work.
  • Ability to undertake strenuous manual handling activities, such as moving deceased patients.
  • Ability to work often in cold conditions
  • Ability to work in conditions which may include body fluids and unpleasant odours

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous mortuary or funeral home experience
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate sensitively with bereaved families.
  • Able to liaise with colleagues, relatives, police and undertakers and have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to deal with distressing situations including bereaved relatives and parents following the death of a child or sudden unexpected deaths.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage time.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Full working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, keyboard skills and experience of input into data base
  • Awareness of bereavement, cultural and religious needs
  • Awareness of The Human Tissue Act
  • Infection control, cleaning techniques

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good general standard of education including GCSE grades in English and Mathematics
  • ECDL or equivalent qualification relating to IT skills including Excel, Microsoft Word and Outlook.
