Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a candidate interested in a permanent clinical oncology consultant post at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic clinical oncologist to join our well-established, dedicated and supportive team.

The successful candidate will join a team of 14 consultant oncologists supported by three specialty doctors and six clinical oncology SpRs to serve a population of 750,000. The department treats the full spectrum of malignant disease including breast, lung, lower and upper GI, haematology, gynaecology, urology, neuro-oncology, skin, and head and neck. SABR is delivered for primary lung cancer and oligometastatic disease. SRS is delivered in partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust for skull base tumours and brain metastasis.

The post will cover lung and one other tumour group preferably breast (radiotherapy only) or lymphoma though other interests can be discussed. You will be located at Queen’s Hospital, Romford, Essex where the Oncology department is based.

Main duties of the job

Consultant Clinical Oncologist (Lungs)

To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring oncology services, as outlined in the proposed program which includes the following:

· Clinical oncology management of lung malignancy including RT/SABR and SACT.

·       Clinical oncology management of one other tumour site.

·    New patient numbers approx. 170-200 per annum. This will be four to five patients per week on a 42-week year.

·    To work with and support the established multi-disciplinary site-specific teams.

·       Outpatient chemotherapy and inpatient clinical opinions.

·       Participate in the oncology urgent/emergency care service:

    • Once current recruitment is complete consultants on-call frequency will be 1:15 non-resident for advice.
    • During core hours 0845-1700 Monday to Friday we operate a ‘consultant of the day model’. This consists of attendance of the Sky B board round, input into oncology patients presenting to ED overnight. Patients who present with SACT or RT related toxicity are expected to have care ‘taken over’ by oncology. Those patients placed outside of the specialist ward are required to have daily input from the consultant or SpR of the day. Routine elective work within the job plan is cancelled or reduced accordingly.

(Please see attached JD for full details of the main duties)

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.

They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
