Job overview

The Sirona Adult Learning Disability Health (ALDH) Service is a centre of excellence for specialist learning disability health needs. We cover 3 localities where multidisciplinary teams enable our service users to access health services through direct care, liaison with other services and offering 
support and training on how to work with people who have a learning disability and how to make reasonable adjustments.

The service prides itself on delivering high quality support to service users 
with a variety of physical and mental health issues alongside their Learning Disability. 

The supportive and innovative Speech and Language Therapy team are looking for a Band 5 therapist passionate about working with adults with a learning disability to join our team. We provide opportunities to develop skills in Signing, Talking Mats, using Visual communication strategies, developing accessible information, delivering training to support teams and working collaboratively with our MDT colleagues. 

Main duties of the job

  • To provide community-based Speech and Language Therapy to adults with a learning disability.

  • To support adults with Learning disabilities (LD) who present with communication and/or eating and drinking needs.

  • To work within the multidisciplinary team (MDT) towards a person-centred approach and to implement and evaluate appropriate care plans to improve positive health outcomes.

  • To work as part of an MDT to develop, deliver and implement resources and training to care providers and mainstream services to promote inclusion and improved outcomes for people.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised qualification in speech and language therapy
  • Registration with Health Professions Council (HPC) and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT);
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised qualification and experience of managing dysphagia in the community

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience relevant to community working
  • Experience of working with/involving people with an LD
  • Able to employ auditory and perceptual skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment
  • Awareness of/experience of using augmentative and alternative communication systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of developing accessible resources
