Job overview
Role of the Senior Clinical Fellow:
It is desirable that the postholder will already have the necessary skills to work in the Intensive Care and Maternity Units but additional training will be available in these areas. On a regular basis the postholder will also be supervised by Consultants in Intensive Care, Maternity Units, and Operating Theatre to ensure a good skill mix and high standard of practice.
Those appointed as Medical Training Initiative trainees will be supervised throughout their placement in the UK and that they will be appraised through annual ARCP-like assessments and the six-monthly reports (which will be sent to the RCoA). In addition, they will not form more than 30% of any rota.
There will also be opportunities to get involved in audit, clinical governance, service improvement and teaching activities.
Main duties of the job
This is a fixed term post to maintain the provision of anaesthesia services for elective and emergency patients, with the possibility of further extension.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide preoperative assessment, perioperative and postoperative care to patients at Bedford Hospital.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide anaesthesia for the broad range of surgical specialties on site. This includes General surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Plastic Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics. In addition, Bedford Hospital is the tertiary Vascular unit of the region.
The on-call commitment will be on a 1:8 basis (non-prospective), and the rota is EWTD and New Deal compliant. This will be to cover emergencies, Intensive Care and Obstetrics at the Bedford Hospital. The post holder will be resident and will support the middle grade rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
General Duties:
- Patients to be seen and assessed on the ward prior to surgery or admission to Intensive Care.
- Keeping such records as may be required. These must be dated and initialled, together with any other related administrative duties, including discharge and Clinic letters.
- Effect detailed handover at the end of a duty shift
- In the event of a list cancellation or early finish, be available on site for possible re-assignment to other lists.
- Duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s) in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior. Additional commitments arising under this paragraph are exceptional. In particular, the doctor will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
- To read and follow any protocols and clinical guidelines laid down (either in writing or verbally) for the anaesthetic department.
- In case of any difficulties, either clinical or administrative, to ensure advice is sought from a senior colleague.
- To accurately gather data required for clinical audit and to participate in audit meetings. Keep a log book (electronic or written) of the cases anaesthetised.

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Full registration with the General Medical Council.
- Relevant postgraduate qualification (MD, Diploma in Anaesthesia)
Desirable criteria
- FRCA or equivalent

Clinical Experience
