Job overview

Due to a significant uplift to our nursing establishment we are excited to be able to recruit nurse associates to our growing and progressive emergency department.

The post holder is expected to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team providing high quality care for patients with acute illness or injury within the Emergency Department (ED) within your scope of practice.

The post holder will take part in a training programme to become competent in the role of and Emergency Department Nurse Associate as outlined below.

Main duties of the job

  • To work with wider multidisciplinary team to assess/ plan/ implement care and treatment to patients from across all parts of the bedford and surrounding communities including resuscitation/ trauma/ paediatric ED/ minor injuries/ illnesses and mental health crises.
  • Ensure essential nurse care is delivered to all patients in the department - nutrition/ hydration/ pain relief/ repositioning and medication.
  • Administration of medication
  • Support patients and their families/ care givers during time of distress/ bereavement showing compassion and empathy.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Use good communication skills to disseminate information and promote and maintain good working relationships within the department and trust wide. 
  • Promote the use of communications skills to overcome language and understanding difficulties when interacting with patients and their relatives.
  • Be able to show empathy and compassion on a frequent basis, when caring for people who are experiencing bereavement or have a relative who is critically ill.
  • Be able to use communication skills when taking telephone queries about the condition of patients or from patients or their relatives who have a complaint.
  • To assist in establishing the promotion of health and the prevention of illness.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Completion of NA Foundation Degree and registered with the NMC
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • ILS
  • PILS
  • Diploma/Degree in health related subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the Role of the Nursing Associate in the Emergency Department
  • Working on your own initiative
  • Awareness of current local and national nursing issues
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of appropriate standards and external bodies (CQC/ RCEM etc.)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • The ability to prioritise workload and patient care needs and deal with emergency situations.
  • Awareness of National targets and standards for Emergency Departments
  • Ability to prioritise care associated with changing environment and patient demands.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Emergency Department experience.
  • Venepuncture and Cannulation Skills

Personal Skills

  • Able to work in all areas of the Emergency Department including Paediatric ED (with RSCN).
  • Reliable, Adaptable and Dependable
  • Enthusiastic and self-aware
