Job overview
Applications are invited for a Fellowship position in Ophthalmology for a period of one year.
This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and energetic experienced Ophthalmologist to train in Cornea with exposure to a Consultant with broad expertise from lamellar Transplants through to Refractive Surgery with modern technology.
The Corneal Unit specialises in lamellar Keratoplasty, Anterior Segment Reconstruction and Keratorefractive Surgery. The department is highly equipped for Corneal Surgery.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will actively conduct/participate in audits related to both clinical and non-clinical aspect of the work and participate in hospital Clinical Audit Programmes and Clinical Governance.
To assist in the management and support of junior staff according to Trust policies and in line with the requirements of the clinical service.
Where possible, the post holders will be encouraged to develop a research interest compatible with the background of the department and its facilities. Audit will be a mandatory part of this role.
To maintain effective communication and working relationships with medical, scientific, management, technical and nursing staff, as required for performing the responsibilities of this post. This includes electronic communication within the department, the Trust, and with national and international colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The CCT Fellow will be responsible to the Clinical Director for Ophthalmology. Whilst in the Department of Ophthalmology the CCT Fellow will work with:
Outpatient Clinic: The medical management of refractive, corneal, and external disorders, as well as the preoperative evaluation and postoperative care of surgical and refractive cases.
Surgery: As the fellow progresses in his/her knowledge, ability more, and more of the surgical procedures will be performed by the fellow
1st On Call Duties supporting the Out Of Hours Service

Essential criteria
- Medical Degree
- Relevant postgraduate qualification MBBS or equivalent
- FRCOphth
Desirable criteria
- • MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
Registration
Essential criteria
- • Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
- • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview)
Eligibility
Essential criteria
- • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
- • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
Desirable criteria
- Experience in Corneal and Cataract Surgery

- Applicant’s knowledge is up to date and fit to practice safely
Language Skills

- Applicant has undertaken undergraduate medical training in English

- Acute care safe: up-to-date ALS. Hospital at night team working / experience. Out of hours experience relevant to the job.
- Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job, specialty knowledge exam
- Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
Desirable criteria
- ALS instructors certificate
- Specialty knowledge exam
- Ability to carry out high volume cataract surgery independently
Clinical Governance

- Able and willing to participate in clinical governance meetings and present topics/audits to MDT as appropriate.
