Job overview

Provide advanced, autonomous clinical practice in cardiac rhythm management (CRM) to deliver safe, effective, patient-centred care. The post-holder will independently undertake complex device follow-up and programming (PPM, ICD, CRT-P/D), support device implant/upgrade procedures, manage remote monitoring workflows, and provide in-lab support for diagnostic EP studies and catheter ablation. The role includes clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, training and supervision of staff, and participation in extended-day/on-call arrangements as required. Cross-site working will be required to meet service needs across Trust locations

Main duties of the job

Provide advanced clinical expertise in Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM), acting autonomously within agreed protocols.

Independently perform complex device follow-up and programming for pacemakers (PPM), implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD), and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT-P/D), including troubleshooting and optimisation.

Support device implant and upgrade procedures, including peri-procedural testing, safe programming, and post-operative optimisation.

Remote monitoring services, triaging alerts, taking appropriate clinical action, and ensuring accurate documentation.

Anticipate and respond to peri-procedural complications.

Involvement in clinical governance activities, including audit, incident review, and quality improvement projects.

Provide teaching, training, and supervision for junior physiologists, trainees, and cath lab staff; act as a role model for professional standards.

Contribute to service development, including pathway redesign, adoption of new technologies (e.g., conduction system pacing).

Participate in extended day and/or on-call rotas and cross-site working to meet service needs.

Maintain compliance with IR(ME)R, radiation safety, infection prevention, and safeguarding policies.

Job summary

The post-holder will provide advanced clinical expertise in Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM), acting autonomously within agreed protocols and governance frameworks. This senior role involves independent management of complex cardiac devices and support for electrophysiology procedures, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care across The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust sites, including New Cross Hospital and other locations as required. The role encompasses leadership in clinical governance, service development, and staff training, contributing to innovation and quality improvement within the cardiology service. The post-holder will participate in extended day and/or on-call rotas and cross-site working to meet service needs.

 

Main duties

Provide advanced clinical expertise in CRM, acting autonomously within agreed protocols and governance frameworks.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or equivalent
  • ILS
  • BHRS accreditation (Devices and/or EP) and/or IBHRE

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant Band 6 experience across CRM and Cath lab
  • Independent follow up /programming PPM/ICD/CRT and trouble shooting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with conduction system pacing
  • Hands on support in EP studies/ablations

Knowledge and skills

Essential criteria
  • Advance knowledge of device therapy
  • Proficiency with major device programmers and remote platforms
Desirable criteria
  • Familiarity with 3D mapping systems
  • knowledge of electrophysiology
