Job overview

University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Trust is delighted to have the opportunity to appoint a Substantive Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist in a replacement post for a retiring colleague. This is a full time (10 PA) post. The appointee will join 3 NHS consultants and two consultants with academic and NHS responsibilities to provide a secondary and tertiary nephrology service to the local population, and a comprehensive tertiary service to the South West Region (population of 4 million). In addition the Bristol Renal Unit also provides renal transplantation for the children of South Wales (population of 2 million).

 

The paediatric nephrology service at UHBW provides the full range of secondary and tertiary nephrology care in Bristol and the South-West region. The complete range of facilities needed to manage kidney disease and transplantation are available. The service has the support of a full multidisciplinary team including four community nurses, a social worker, a psychologist, renal dieticians and play-specialist as well as experienced inpatient and haemodialysis nursing staff. Additionally, it provides the renal transplantation service to South Wales.

Main duties of the job

The consultants provide 24 hour cover for the service including support of all patients locally, a consultation service for other departments and telephone advice to the Region and South Wales (out of hours). This is provided by an on service rota, which will be shared in proportion to the sessional commitments with the other consultants with prospective cover. The appointee will also perform renal biopsies on an ad hoc basis, as a responsibility shared with two other consultants.

 

The post-holder will take on a variety of outpatient responsibilities in the Bristol area by covering clinics in Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (complex clinic, general clinic, renal endocrine and stones clinic) and Southmead Hospital (general and transition clinics), as well as outreach clinics in Barnstaple and Exeter respectively 2 and 4 times a year.

 

Applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or have evidence of being within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by the date of interview. The applicant will also need to have full GMC registration.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or
  • Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview or
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in paediatric nephrology
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy

Clinical Knowledge and skills

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge and experience of paediatric nephrology
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to paediatric nephrology

  • Skills in performing renal biopsies
  • Broad range of IT skills
