UHBW is seeking three Clinical Teaching Fellows to join the North Somerset Academy at Weston General Hospital. These posts offer a fantastic opportunity to develop a career in Medical Education while maintaining clinical experience in a supportive learning environment.
The Clinical Teaching Fellow is a key member of the Undergraduate Medical Education Team of North Somerset Academy. This post offers the opportunity to become intensively involved in Medical and Surgical Education of Medical and Dental Students, whilst maintaining clinical exposure and experience in a supportive educational environment. The prime function of the post holder is as a teacher delivering core content and tutorials for medical students in Years 2,3 & 5 of the undergraduate curriculum of the University of Bristol MBchB programme. Teaching will take place in a variety of forms: Small group tutorials; larger group tutorials; skill based practical sessions; bedside clinical teaching; clinic based history and examination; simulation of clinical scenarios.
Main duties of the job

Clinical Teaching Fellows play a key role in delivering Undergraduate Medical Education for University of Bristol medical students (Years 2,3 and 5).
- 9 teaching sessions per week: Teaching, tutoring, and pastoral support
- 1 clinical session per week: in an area of your choice
- Opportunity to complete a funded Postgraduate Medical Education Certificate (from an approved list)
- Involvement in educational research
Teaching responsibilities span Years 2–5, including:
• Year 2: Effective Consulting Clerkship
• Year 3: Full-time clerkships across medicine, surgery & specialties
• Year 5: Assistantships in Acute & Critical Care, Primary Care and Ward-Based Care
You’ll get involved in bedside teaching, small group teaching, tutorials, and helping run assessments both locally and with the Medical School. You will join a wider faculty of Clinical Teaching Fellows across UHBW, contributing to high-quality teaching, student support, and curriculum delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
North Somerset Academy is one of 8 Academies forming the University of Bristol Medical School.
This full-time post is for 9 teaching sessions and 1 clinical session (supernumerary) undertaken in a department within the Hospital, of the post holders choosing.
Objectives of the Post:
• To develop competence in teaching and develop teaching skills through studying a Certificate in Medical Education
• To develop and deliver the MBchB curriculum for Medical Students in years 2,3 or 5. The post holder will be allocated a year group and work closely with the Undergraduate Medical Education team to plan and deliver the units. New course design will require some flexibility.
• To support the other year undergraduate teaching programmes, including the development of teaching materials and enhancement of learning within the clinical skills lab with the other CTFs.
• Act as a professional role model and mentor for the student body during their placements.
• Supervise the generic professional behaviours/skills that are expected of the students - and demonstrate these at all times.
• Contribute and participate in the assessment process for medical students
• The post holder should be flexible, professional and co-operative within the evolving needs of the clinical academy.
• It may be necessary to attend university meetings in Bristol or examine in other academies.
You will be expected work 40 hours per week - clinical work limited to set days – on all other days teaching takes priority.

Essential criteria
- Able to assess, resuscitate and stabilise acutely sick patients.
- Appropriate defined level of clinical knowledge and clinical competence
- Understand Audit/governance processes
- Show awareness of limitations
- Evidence of experience of teaching medical students
Desirable criteria
- Shows knowledge of evidence based practice.
- Exposure to different groups/teaching methods.
- Knowledge of University of Bristol curriculum.
- Hands on experience of research
- Publications – abstracts/articles
- Demonstrate interest in research and audit.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- Current full registration with the GMC
- Completed Foundation Training programme or equivalent in a UK hospital, by commencement of the post.
- Must have worked in paid employment as a Doctor in the NHS for a minimum of 2 years
Desirable criteria
- Good Academic Record
- Intercalated BSc/higher degree/Teaching qualification
- ACLS/ATLS/APLS
- MRCP/MRCS/MRCGP
Additional and Aptitudes

- IT skills on all Microsoft packages
