Job overview

An exciting opportunity has a arisen for you to join the Paediatric Diabetes Team to cover a maternity post as a Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Specialist Educator at CUH in the beautiful city of Cambridge. As one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country Addenbrooke’s Hospital acts as both a regional and national specialist centre.

In this role you will be working within the wider Paediatric Diabetes Team. This team comprises of  Nurses and Dietitians who work together in the wider MDT in an extended educator role as key workers providing support, education and guidance in all aspects of care for children with diabetes. The team is also part of a regional network and undertake projects and on-call duties as part of this.

This post would be ideal for experienced Band 6 or Band 7 with a background in paediatric diabetes, service and policy development who are looking to further gain skills in management of diabetes technology and holistic patient management.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is a recognised expert in the specialty, responsible for assessing, developing and implementing specialist nursing care programmes and undertaking 

Responsible for providing specialist advice and support to, and liaising with, other staff. This includes the provision of specialist education and training for other staff and students

Responsible for implementing a clearly defined integrated approach to patient care encompassing new treatments and evidence based care.

Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based policies / protocols and guidelines within the specialty in collaboration with other professional groups and users. Propose changes to working practices or procedures for own work area

Carrying own caseload of patients and running of nurse-led clinics. Allocation to MDT clinics to support CYP with management as well as ongoing education as required

Starting and reviewing patients on Hybrid closed loop system, continuous glucose monitors using various downloading platforms.

Management of inpatient and outpatients. Providing expert specialist clinical advice for patients, carers and health care professionals.

Take part in the Out of hours cover as part of the East Of England Diabetes Network consortia  and project work within the Network.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/ RN Child
  • First Degree (or equivalent level) in nursing or health-related subject
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification
  • Evidence of on-going CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Post-graduate Diploma/ Degree/Masters
  • Counselling qualification, Motivational interviewing or equivalent experience.
  • Non-medical prescriber
  • Good Clinical Practice training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working with acute and chronically ill children/ young people and adults
  • Evidence of having worked collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching colleagues/ students and to mentorship
  • Community experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in caring for children with diabetes/endocrinology conditions, and their families
  • Evidence of publications in nursing journals

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Demonstrate an understanding of the implications of the - Children Act - National Service Framework - Every Child Matters - Working together to Safeguard Children - NHS Plan
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in developing care pathways and patient information
