Job overview
We are seeking a dedicated Bank Dental Therapist to support the delivery of the National Dental Epidemiology Programme by undertaking dental examinations for 5‑year‑old children in Reception and Year 1 across selected schools.
This role involves carrying out high‑quality, standardised oral health assessments that contribute to national data used to improve children’s oral health, reduce inequalities, and inform future service planning.
You will represent our service during school visits, working with professionalism, accuracy, and a child‑centred approach. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to an important public health programme while working flexibly as part of our committed dental team.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with the Dental HealthCare Team to provide high quality dentistry to patients of the special care dental service. This includes priority and vulnerable adults and children who would not otherwise be able to access emergency or routine care. They will also carry out epidemiological survey work in line with national programmes.
Participation in epidemiological fieldwork carried out by Dental HealthCare on behalf of The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities.
Provision of a wide range of permitted clinical treatments for patients as defined in the scope of practice of a therapist by the General Dental Council.
Provision of additional duties where evidence of accredited training in these duties can be shown. Additional duties include provision of care under inhalation sedation, application of silver diamine fluoride and provision of stainless-steel crowns on deciduous teeth.
Provision of clinical dental care to patients who are house bound on a domiciliary basis, where the treatment meets the scope of practice for a Dental Therapist.
Provision of Oral Health Promotion advice to patients and carers on a one-to-one basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Communication
- Skilled communication with a range of patients and their families or carers will be required, as this role is primarily working with patients who have additional needs, some of whom will have communication barriers.
- Communication of sometimes complex clinical information to patients of the service, sometimes in difficult circumstances and delivering difficult news.
- Explaining risks and benefits of clinical care and treatment modalities to patients and their families or carers.
- Excellent communication with clinical peers and leaders in a professional manner is essential to inspire confidence, motivation, and teamwork, and in the best interests of patients.
- Communicates with other health and social care professionals on a range of issues relating to oral health.
- Contributes to CCS’ internal communication strategies ensuring effective two-way communication and engagement within the organisation.
People Management
- Responsible for day-to-day supervision of dental nurse working alongside
- Ability to mentor new dental nurses and therapists.
- Supervision of inhalation sedation trainees who are completing their logged sedation cases.
- Maintaining own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and KSF process
Clinical and Practice Governance
- Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
- Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call or transported, faxed or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regard to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
- The post holder must adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes.
- The post holder must adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
- It is a condition of your employment that you are currently registered with the GDC and it is your responsibility to maintain your professional registration.
- Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust.
- The post holder must participate in clinical and safeguarding audits as required.
- Provide patients and their families /carers with information on standards they should expect from the service and ensure the service has mechanisms to capture patient experience.
- Participate in clinical supervision on a regular basis.
- The post holder is required to participate in relevant emergency preparedness process for their team.
