We are looking for qualified Consultants to join our diverse and friendly team in delivering comprehensive Rheumatology services at Peterborough City Hospital, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and Stamford and Rutland Hospital on a full-time basis. All of our consultants work across multiple locations.

Our Consultants have special interests in early inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, spondylarthritis, systemic vasculitis and ultrasound. We will encourage and support you to develop a special interest.

You will hold MRCP or equivalent qualification and full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the specialist register via CCST/CESR or within a period of 6 months from obtaining CCST. However, newly qualified consultants are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

Our team of clinicians comprises 4.56 Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) Consultants, 1.0 WTE Specialist Trainee from the Eastern Deanery, 0.4 WTE ITSP and 1 WTE Trust SPR and 5.93 WTE Rheumatology Specialist Nurses and 0.6 WTE Osteoporosis Specialist Nurse.

There are no out-of-hours or on-call commitments.

As one of the 6 Consultants, you will carry out a 10 Programmed Activity (PA) job. The proposed Consultant Rheumatologist job plan consists of 8.5 PA clinical care and 1.5 PA supporting professional activity (SPA). The SPA time is for personal CPD, mandatory training and appraisal. Any additional roles such as educational supervisor will be supported by additional PAs as part of the formal job planning process.

Clinical activity will include 5 clinics per week with a case mix of new and follow up patients. All clinic numbers are consistent with the RCP guidelines set out in the document “Consultant Physicians working with patient – revised 5th edition” (12th Oct 2015). You will will carry out clinics at both Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Professional

The post holder is expected to provide predominantly outpatient care for adult Rheumatology patients referred by general practitioners, hospital colleagues and tertiary referrers to North West Anglia NHS trust. They will not be expected to provide Paediatric Rheumatology services.

The post holder is expected to partake in the clinical governance program of the department including undertaking clinical audits as agreed in the departmental audit plan.

The post holder is expected to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to his or her own professional development including annual continual professional development activity (CPD) in line with Royal College guidelines. They will be expected to undertake an annual appraisal and to ensure that they are maintaining the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for their five-yearly revalidation.

Managerial

The post holder is expected to attend regular departmental meetings, to contribute to managerial discussion and to provide appropriate internal, regional, and national audit data to governance discussions/departmental audit plans. There are opportunities to develop a specific managerial role within the department and a wider Trust level. There will also be regular meetings, within the North West Anglia NHS Foundation trust (governance, business and educational), that the post holder will be expected to attend.

Organisational

The post holder is expected to communicate with the administrative, secretarial, and multi- professional staff within the departments and to respond appropriately and in a timely fashion to requests for advice. The post holder is expected to ensure that clinical records are appropriately maintained with legible records and that information is promptly and appropriately communicated to GPs and patients. The post holder has responsibility for reviewing and taking required action for all investigations they have booked and supervise the multi-professional staff who work with them in the care of their patients.

Educational

The post holder is expected to participate, through on-the-job observation, in the training and assessment of rheumatology trainees (Specialist Trainees and GP VTS trainees, clinical fellow) and medical students attached to the team. There is scope for developing a further educational role at a graduate or post graduate level with our close working relationship with Leicester and Cambridge Universities and Health Education East of England. The post holder would be given opportunity to take on more formal educational role such as postgraduate clinical supervisor or educational supervisor. Over the past 10 years we have received excellent formal and informal feedback from the rheumatology trainees.

  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • MRCP Intercollegiate or equivalent
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC in Rheumatology via CCT (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview), CESR or European Community Rights
  • Full GMC Registration

  • MD or PhD

  • Effective written (including record keeping) and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to travel to meet the requirements of the post
  • Fluent in verbal and written English
