A two-year secondment opportunity has arisen in Public Health Wales (PHW) for an enthusiastic and innovative Designated Doctor for Safeguarding Children to join the National Safeguarding Service. The successful candidate would fill a unique post as both a Designated Doctor for 4 sessions per week at PHW as well as retaining their required clinical responsibilities for the rest of the week within their substantive role.  

The National Safeguarding Service (NSS) is a national team of independent experts that work collaboratively with stakeholders such as Welsh Government, Health Boards, NHS Trusts and Regional Safeguarding Boards with the vision and overall aim of improving safeguarding across the NHS in Wales. Designated professionals, as clinical experts and strategic leaders, take a strategic, professional lead on all aspects of the health service contribution to safeguarding children and Adults-at-risk across Wales.

Main duties of the job

As a member of this team, the post holder will work at a national level to support the NSS in delivering its vision and provide strategic clinical leadership to specific aspects of the work programme.  In addition, the post holder will represent Wales at the RCPCH Child Protection standing committee and support the work of the college ensuring that it fits with Welsh safeguarding legislation.

The post holder would also be clinically active (or active within the last 2 years) as a paediatric consultant within their substantive position (or equivalent), ensuring that the requirements of the RCPCH Designated Doctor person specifications are met.
