Job overview

This post is a Fixed Term/ Secondment until 28/01/2026. If you are a Hywel Dda University Health Board employee and are applying for this post as a secondment, agreement for the secondment is needed from your current manager prior to application.

The main purpose of the role is to support extending the reach and visibility of Hywel Dda Health Charities with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding of the charity and its impact and to raise and distribute funds to enhance our local NHS services.

Working closely with the Senior Communications Officer, Fundraising Manager and the charity’s fundraising team, the post holder will support the provision of a comprehensive and high-quality communications and administration service.

Main duties of the job

The aim is to promote the work of our charity, tell the story of our fundraisers and supporters, as well as the impact of our charitable expenditure on the lives of NHS patients, service users and staff. 

The Communications Assistant post will deal with enquiries from staff, media, social media and stakeholders; deliver written, audio, design and video content for different platforms; and support events.

The role is integral to the effective running of the charity’s fundraising and communications operations, co-ordinating and supporting relevant projects and programmes of work ensuring compliance with the charity’s work plan.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Educated to diploma level or equivalent OR equivalent knowledge and experience in the communications field (communications, public relations, journalism, digital communications).
  • Knowledge of tools and techniques of traditional and new media.
  • Qualification or demonstrative knowledge of the legislation governing media and publishers (slander/libel, copyright, accessibility).
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in communications field.
  • Understanding of Editor’s Code of Conduct and the Chartered Institute of Public Relation’s professional code of conduct.
  • Understanding of NHS charities and/or the fundraising operations of third sector organisations.
  • Good knowledge of the NHS in Wales.

Language Skills

Desirable criteria
  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as part of a communications team delivering campaigns.
  • Experience of creating excellent communication content for different audiences and using different mechanisms and platforms.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with journalists.
  • Experience of working in or with the public sector.
  • Creating accessible content in line with the Digital Accessibility Standards.
  • Experience of using and maintaining databases.
