Job overview

Combine a rewarding consultant role with the opportunity to live and work in one of the most scenic parts of Wales. Hywel Dda University Health Board is seeking a Locum Consultant Haematologist to join our supportive and forward-thinking Haematology team, based primarily at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen while contributing to services across the wider Health Board.

We are looking for a committed clinician who can bring additional specialist expertise to our well-established team and help further develop subspecialty services across the region. This role offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on patient care while working within a collaborative service that values innovation, service development and professional growth.

Our team of seven consultants delivers a comprehensive Haematology service across four hospital sites in West Wales, caring for a diverse patient population across both malignant and non-malignant haematology. Based at our largest acute hospital, you will be supported by a multidisciplinary team including Consultant colleagues, Specialist Doctors, Clinical Fellows, Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists and Specialist Haematology Pharmacists.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice

The successful candidate will provide high-quality care across the full spectrum of Haematology and will have the opportunity to develop and enhance a subspecialist interest across the Health Board. Working closely with consultant colleagues, you will contribute to the continued development of subspecialty services and support the delivery of modern, patient-centred care.

Inpatient Care

You will provide specialist Haematology input for inpatients across the site, working closely with acute and specialty teams to support the management of complex haematological conditions. The role includes contributing to the education and development of medical colleagues and maintaining close links with the Acute Oncology Service, which supports haematology inpatients across the Health Board.

Outpatient Services

The post includes participation in 3-4 outpatient clinics per week, with flexibility to incorporate additional subspecialist activity depending on experience and service requirements. As increasing numbers of patients return from tertiary centres for ongoing treatment and follow-up closer to home, the local Haematology service plays a vital role in their continuing care. Telephone and virtual consultations are actively encouraged to improve accessibility for patients across our rural communities.
