Job overview

We are seeking a committed Specialty Doctor in Paediatrics to join the team at Glangwili General Hospital. This permanent post offers the opportunity to work at middle grade level within a supportive and well-established paediatric service.

You will join a rota alongside paediatric trainees and experienced Specialty Doctors, contributing to a collaborative and friendly team environment. The role includes opportunities to lead ward-based care, gain broad clinical experience, and develop a special interest through dedicated clinic time, study leave, and supervision.

Main duties of the job

The Women and Children’s Health Directorate delivers care for children, young people, and women across Hywel Dda. The paediatric service is supported by an experienced senior nursing team and is focused on delivering high-quality, integrated care.

Services are designed to meet local population needs, with acute paediatrics provided across district general hospital sites and a centralised Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), managing approximately 250 admissions per year. Neonatal intensive care is supported through a regional transport service.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties. 

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services. 

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers. 

Our services are provided in: 

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest 

  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire 

  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings 

  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers 

  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Person specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice.
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional clinical qualification(s).
  • Evidence of working towards membership of the Royal College.

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of risk management.
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
  • NHS Experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Able to demonstrate evidence of leading a team.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and resident doctors.

Other

  • Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner
