Are you a Welsh speaking doctor who is excited by the prospect of becoming involved with medical education? Do you have the ability to inspire and motivate medical students and resident doctors? Could you identify innovative opportunities to enhance medical education across Hywel Dda? If so, this may be the ideal role for you.

An exciting opportunity has become available for an enthusiastic and suitably qualified medical practitioner to join Hywel Dda University Health Board’s progressive team of medical educators, in the role of Medical Education Teaching Fellow for the department of Medicine in Withybush General Hospital.

This full time teaching fellow role is being offered on a 12month fixed term basis and expectations of the role include supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across all medical specialties, in addition to providing generic teaching sessions for all medical students.

The position combines medical education with clinical practice, enabling the successful candidate to maintain and enhance their expertise in a specialty that aligns with their particular interest. On-call sessions will also be optional where there are rota gaps.  The successful candidate will also be allocated time within the working week for continuing professional development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The role includes:-

  • providing ward-based and classroom teaching to Medical Students, Physician Associate Students and Resident Doctors
  • supporting individual learning needs through activities such as case-based discussions, history-taking assessments and workplace-based assessments.
  • facilitating undergraduate tutorials in line with  Cardiff and Swansea Medical School curricula
  • contribute to Foundation, IMT and GPST core teaching programmes, Health Board Grand Rounds and simulation-based education in collaboration with the Clinical Skills and Simulation Tutor
  • supporting Medical Students and Resident Doctors through pastoral care, engagement with the Resident Doctors Forum and assistance with feedback collection and the GMC National Training Survey
  • support and train overseas Clinical Fellows and International Medical Graduates
  • assist with the organisation of Royal College examinations and mock exams
  • participate in quality improvement initiatives, and support innovation in medical education.
  • Professional development is integral to the role, with an expectation to undertake a postgraduate qualification in Medical Education (if not already held) and maintain a reflective learning portfolio.
