Job overview

Hywel Dda University Health Board are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to join the Research and Development team as a Research Development Manager, on a part time basis. The base is likely to be in Carmarthenshire but could be flexible within the health board.

The successful candidate will provide specialist advice to health board staff and external research collaborators to support the development of research for health board sponsorship, including ensuring appropriate design, approvals and conduct of research studies.

Main duties of the job

You will: 

Prepare funding bids and develop collaborations in conjunction with health board researchers, to enable the conduct of research studies.

Promote the delivery of the Research Development and Innovation strategy and notably those objectives linked directly to the R&D department.

Liaise with Health and Care Research Wales, and other relevant organisations to access resources and support for investigators.

Identify and strengthen collaborations by actively engaging with investigators, academic collaborators, clinical research fellows, 
research nurses, health professionals, support departments, academic departments and external organisations to ensure they receive 
appropriate and tailored support. This includes providing specialist advice to support the establishment of local research groups and 
collaborations.

Work with health professionals and research collaborators to develop complex new research studies by monitoring and auditing current 
findings and initiatives and identifying areas of future research through interpreting and comparing complex programmes of work.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Degree
  • Master’s or equivalent level of experience
  • Ability to design and conduct high-quality research studies
  • Specialised knowledge of NHS R&D procedures and governance
  • Detailed knowledge of research development including funding
  • Comprehensive understanding of confidentiality and data protection
Desirable criteria
  • PhD completed or close to completion

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience in a research environment
  • Previous experience of working with key stakeholders from the academic, public and private sectors in developing research studies
  • Experience of working with the NHS and universities
  • Experience of clinical research study management
  • Proven track record of obtaining funding for research or contributing to funding bids

Other

Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel to different locations within the Health Board in a timely manner
  • Flexible approach to the needs of the service
Desirable criteria
  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
