Job overview
Working Full time: 37.5 hours per week
Will be a member of a multi disciplined medical engineering team and will work without supervision on a wide range of complex medical equipment. There will be particular responsibility for highly complex systems including patient monitoring units, diagnostic ultrasound, anaesthetic machines, life support ventilators, medical lasers, infusion devices, baby incubators and defibrillators. These equipment’s will at times, be connected to patients. Most of the work will be none routine and the ability to prioritise and respond to emergency requests is essential.
Main duties of the job
1) To carry out acceptance testing including functional and quality assurance tests, electrical safety tests, planned maintenance, calibration, repairs and defect investigation on a wide range of complex medical equipment or devices used for patient care. The work will be mostly of a none routine nature.
2) To work on medical equipment that requires highly developed techniques, expertise and accurate control of precision tools and small components. The use of expensive and specialised test equipment is required to carry out most tasks. This will be in Wards, Accident and Emergency, Operating Theatres, Intensive Therapy Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Central Labour Suite and Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit, etc. There will be a need to lift and manoeuvre heavy equipment between clinical areas, customer sites and the EBME laboratory.
3) To plan and organise maintenance tasks related to their duties and prioritise responses to emergency breakdown requests, proceeding logically and analytically under conditions of urgency taking appropriate action where and when required. Maintenance tasks will involve working with hazardous voltages, anaesthetic agents and medical gases under high pressure.
4) To participate in the department’s emergency on-call rota that provides the trust with continuous technical cover, including advice on clinical application of medical devices.

The Trust’s services are provided from three locations:
• The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 473 general and acute beds.
• Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 60 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
• Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

Essential criteria
- Knowledge of electronic or instrumentation systems to component level.
- Ability to diagnose faults to component level on a range of complex medical devices.
- Calibration techniques using specialised test equipment.
Qualifications

- HNC/HND or Degree qualified in Electronics, Instrumentation or Medical Engineering.
Desirable criteria
- Certificates of Qualification and Interview.
