Job overview

Working Full time: 40 hours per week

This post will be one of 6 ST1/2 doctors in the department. The posts will offer candidates from the UK or from further abroad a unique opportunity to consolidate their experience in a busy and supportive NHS foundation hospital and provide a stepping-stone to the next level of clinical experience. They will have educational teaching, learning and assessment equivalent to those on national specialty programmes.

The department delivers vascular services across the Network via a hub and spoke model. The service delivers the full complement of vascular services including aortic aneurysms, carotid territory embolic disease and peripheral vascular disease. We also deliver renal access services to support the nephrology service and offer vascular input into a multidisciplinary diabetic foot service. The programme of training for each individual doctor will be flexible depending on his/her particular needs and stage of training.

The post-holder will be based at the Countess of Chester Hospital, which has 26 dedicated Acute Vascular Inpatient beds on Ward 53.

Main duties of the job

In 2014, the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust CoCH became the hub for the South Mersey Arterial Network SMART with Warrington & Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust WHH and Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust WUTH being the spoke sites. The model implemented at this time comprised of a clinical model of care which centralised inpatient vascular and endovascular services at the CoCH, with both WHH and WUTH continuing to provide outpatient services, daycase surgery and interventional radiology services as spoke sites.

There are excellent lab facilities staffed by experienced vascular technologists across the Network in all spoke sites. They play an important role in managing patients with TIAs and thrombophlebitis, in addition to providing the full range of standard investigations. Main operating theatres are located in an 11 theatre complex with a common recovery area, daycase surgery is provided across the network at all sites.

With the development of the SMART Centre, the surgical team will treat in the region of 900 inpatients annually. Of these 900 inpatients, circa 600 will require an operating procedure. This involves a number of procedures including Open AAA, Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR), Carotid Surgery, Upper & Lower Limb Bypass work, Diabetic Foot procedures and Amputations as well as Venous Day Case work.
