Job overview

The post holder will directly support the consultant team, support day to day specimen dissection including training. 

The post holder in collaboration with the Operations Manager, Technical Manager, Section leads and Consultant Pathologists will provide a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective service.

The post holder will ensure the timely processing of patient samples, serving all those patients attending UHP, ICBs representing 100 General Practices referred to us from other Trusts within the Peninsula. The post holder will work together with the senior staff to produce a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective service.

Please note, applications from suitably demonstrable experienced and qualified Specialist Biomedical Scientists (who hold the specialist portfolio) who wish to train towards becoming an Advanced Dissector including completion of the DEP will be considered.  There will be an expectation to complete the DEP in no more than 2 years.  The pay banding will be adjusted to reflect this until training / qualification is completed

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification***

 

Main duties of the job

  1.      To participate in the surgical dissection of diagnostic B-E graded histopathology specimens (range will be dependent on experience, knowledge but also at consultants discretion)
  2.          To act as one of the designated persons responsible for co-ordinating activities for the dissection team whenever the Section lead or their deputy is not available.
  3.            Work with the whole dissection team to improve quality, efficiency and productivity.
  4.        Participate in audits to monitor the effectiveness of dissection practices and facilitate the implementation of service improvement changes based upon those findings.
  5.        To facilitate the induction, training & competencies of staff within the dissection area i.e. Trainee Biomedical Scientists (BMS), BMSs of all grades, Healthcare Associate Practitioners, MTOs & ATOs.  This includes ensuring timely completion of all induction, training & competency records.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.      Support the effective and efficient running of the dissection area.

2.      Achieve, demonstrate, maintain and promote scientific & technical excellence, and by example ensure high professional standards amongst the scientific, technical and support staff in your section within the Department.  

3.      To ensure that the necessary standards of speed, quality and accuracy are met.

       4.      To deputise in the absence of section leads where appropriate

5.      To facilitate the induction, training & competencies of staff within the dissection area i.e. Trainee Biomedical Scientists (BMS), BMSs of all grades, Healthcare Associate Practitioners, MTOs & ATOs.  This includes ensuring timely completion of all induction, training & competency records

6.      Working with the Operations Manager and Technical Services Lead to develop, coordinate and maintain the Department’s programme of continuous service review in accordance with internal and external quality systems and within the Trust’s framework of continuous quality improvement.

        7.      To work and on occasion take the lead on service improvement projects within                        area of expertise

        8.      To work with the quality team and departmental leads to deliver the expected                          quality for UKAS and support in the accreditation process

 9.      To be responsible for the participation in and adherence to the procedures for                both   internal and external quality control (including National External Quality                Assurance Schemes, NEQAS), thereby providing quality assurance in test results          produced. 

10.   Ensure the completion of all datix and CAPA incidents, ensure that they are                   approved and moved from holding area within the datix programme then                         investigated, appropriate action plans applied and incident closed.

       11.   To work in any areas of the laboratory deemed appropriate

       12.   Potential to work evenings and weekends as necessary and as service develops.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (FIBMS) by examination or hold an MSc in Biomedical Sciences or significant equivalent demonstrable experience in a specialist discipline in Pathology.
  • State registration with Health Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Completed diploma of expert practice in histological dissection
  • Supervisory skills course – Trust or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Science based learning
  • Recognised qualification in management/leadership

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate and apply proven knowledge of the Pathology of disease in one or more disciplines within Histology
  • Specialist proven knowledge and demonstrable experience in the technical field of a Pathology discipline
  • Previous demonstrable experience of staff development and performance management
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

  • Excellent communication skills, being able to deal with patients and staff at all levels of the organisation with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to motivate staff, effectively conveying new ideas, generating enthusiasm for involvement and participation
