Job overview

To provide a comprehensive photographic service to the Dermatology department at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As a Dermatology Clinical Photographer, you will play a crucial role in capturing high quality clinical images of patients’ skin conditions using specialised photography techniques and equipment.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should have extensive knowledge of Dermoscopy, and the use of polarised and non-polarised light to visualise features of the skin that are not visible to the naked eye.

Work as an autonomous practitioner and be proficient in all aspects of dermoscopic imaging and dermatology clinical photography, covering a range of clinics, including some evenings and weekends when required. 

Predominantly your place of work is Leighton Hospital Crewe; there will be times when imaging cover is required for Northwich Victoria Infirmary for which you will be required to make your own transport arrangements to cover these clinics.

The post holder will be expected to communicate with a wide range of professionals, Consultants, Doctors, nursing staff and patients/relatives, organising own workload in order to maintain an efficient and professional service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Skills

  1. Utilise specialised photography equipment and techniques to capture precise and high-resolution images of patients’ skin conditions. This includes close-up shots, full-body images, and macro photography to document specific features, patterns, and lesions.

  2. Ensure appropriate lighting conditions and calibration of equipment to achieve accurate colour representation and optimal image quality. Familiarity with different lighting setups and techniques will be essential for capturing consistent and standardised

  3. Interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining the photography process and ensuring their comfort during the imaging session. Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times while creating a supportive and empathetic environment.

  4. To be aware of any unusual test results and take appropriate action, making relevant decisions which may adjust medical requests accordingly to ensure images best represent the diagnosis and information required.

  5. Accurately label and securely catalogue all images, maintaining a comprehensive and organised legible database for easy retrieval. Collaborate with medical staff to ensure proper integration of images into patient records and assist in maintaining accurate medical histories.

 

  1. Conduct regular quality checks to ensure the accuracy and consistency of images. Maintain and calibrate photography equipment to meet industry standards and ensure optimal performance.

 

  1. Work closely with dermatologists and other medical professionals to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Provide visual documentation to assist in monitoring treatment progress and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions.

 

  1. Stay updated on emerging trends and advancements in dermatological photography techniques. Continuously develop your skills and knowledge through workshops, conferences, and professional literature to maintain expertise in the field.

 

  1. To undertake dermatology research to support doctors with new developments in dermatology.

 

  1. Prepare the clinical area for safe practice by ensuring that cleanliness is maintained 

 

Clinical Governance

  1. Contribute to the development of junior staff to ensure a smooth operation of service.
  2. Contribute to the development of relevant protocols for Dermatology Photography for use in the department.
  3. Promote the individual needs of the patient, by acknowledging preferences, rights, and choices, respecting privacy and dignity, and by promoting anti-discriminatory practice, alerting senior staff if   patient care appears to be disrespectful or discriminator
  4. Establish and maintain effective communication, maintaining confidentiality of information
  5. Participate in the effective management of risk, by accurate recording and reporting and correct maintenance of records and documentation
  6. Ensure compliance with Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines, alerting senior staff if practice of self and others appear to contravene policy, or if concerned about any aspect of patient care 

 

Requirements

  1. Proven experience as a Dermatology Photographer.

  2. Proficient in using specialised dermatological photography equipment and techniques.

  3. Strong knowledge of lighting setups, colour calibration, and image post-processing.

  4. Excellent attention to detail and ability to capture precise and consistent images.

  5. Compassionate and patient-centric approach to interacting with individuals with various skin conditions.

  6. Familiarity with medical terminology and an understanding of dermatological conditions and treatments.

  7. Proficient in organising, labelling, and maintaining comprehensive image databases.

  8. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team.

  9. Adherence to patient confidentiality and privacy regulations.

  10. Flexibility to adapt to evolving technologies and industry best practices.

Essential criteria
  • • Degree in Medical Illustration / Clinical Photography or a Degree in Photography
  • • Previous experience as a Dermatology Photographer
  • • Dermoscopy experience
Desirable criteria
  • • Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Illustration
  • • Registered professional with AHCS
