Consultant in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery WSI Orthognathic Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Upon appointment, the Orthognathic service would consist of a team of one surgeon and three Consultant Orthodontists who work collaboratively through all stages of the Orthognathic planning and treatment pathway and carries out approximately 50 osteotomies per annum. The ambition would be to recruit a further Orthognathic surgeon.

The team are supported by an outstanding laboratory with a full range of services including both conventional and virtual orthognathic planning, intra-oral scanning and 3D printing facilities.  There is an established link to the Sleep Disturbance Service with quarterly multidisciplinary meetings. This service has the scope for further expansion and development across the Tees Valley. The unit also provides the regional cleft osteotomy service for patients from the North East and Cumbria

Main duties of the job

The post will be based primarily at James Cook University Hospital with job plans reflecting the individual interests of the appointee. Consultants may be required to undertake some clinical commitments at the Friarage Hospital Northallerton dependent on service need.

The unit presently incorporates 26 beds on a multi specialty ward, used flexibly depending on patient need. The unit provides tertiary services for Head and Neck patients as well as a variety of medical specialties. The Trust provides specialist emergency and elective interventional radiology services which allow the trust to offer regional stroke thrombectomy, neurosurgical endovascular procedures and conventional IR procedures.

Appointees are encouraged to take an active role in the continuous development of the department. Monthly clinical governance and M&M meetings offer the opportunity to review what is done well and what we can improve. Weekly multidisciplinary team meetings allow frequent review of patients.

Working for our organisation

This is a replacement post for a leaving colleague providing our Orthognathic Service. The department currently consists of four substantive Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeons (two head and neck, one trauma/deformity, one trauma/TMJ), a part-time Consultant Oral Surgeon and one Associate Specialist. The candidate will have a specialist interest Orthognathic Surgery. There would be opportunity to develop other areas of specialist interest particularly in the areas of Salivary Endoscopy, TMJ replacement and Facial Surgical Dermatology.
