Job overview
Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The appointee will join our team of ten existing Respiratory colleagues. The post has arisen from plans to reconfigure and strengthen our existing services on the wards and in outpatients. We are particularly looking to strengthen our cough and breathlessness service. Interests in other areas would also be welcome, including asthma, COPD, ILD or physiology. We have a strong lung cancer service with linear and radial EBUS and thoracoscopy to which an applicant could contribute. The GIM component of the post involves unselected take and inpatient care based on the respiratory wards (including the 14 bed high care unit). The on-call commitment will be 1-in-12 weekday evenings and weekend evenings, with the acute physician team covering 9am to 5pm each day seven days a week.
Main duties of the job
Deliver a Consultant-led respiratory service at Wrexham Maelor Hospital for the diagnosis and management of both outpatients and inpatients.
Work within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and managers to further develop local respiratory services.
Participate in the general medical on-call rota and post-take ward rounds, providing leadership and support to the on-call medical team.
Take Consultant responsibility for allocated inpatients, with support from a designated team of resident doctors based on the respiratory ward.
Contribute to the teaching and training of resident doctors and medical students.
Partake in clinical governance meetings and processes.
Follow the policies of the Health Board and Hospital, and attend mandatory training.
Attend relevant business meetings with management.
Maintain and improve knowledge, skills and attitude through personal and professional development with lifelong learning and regular continuing professional development (CPD) activities in order to meet the requirements of the RCP CPD diary and the Good Medical Practice criteria required for annual appraisal.
Be managerially accountable to the Respiratory Clinical Lead, the Clinical Director for Medicine, and the Medical Directorate General Manager (DGM), and engage in an annual job plan review.
Be professionally accountable to the hospital and Executive Medical Director.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- Full GMC Registration with dual accreditation in Respiratory Medicine and G(I)M. The proposed CCT must be within 6 months of the interview date.
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree, e.g. MD or PhD.
- Interest in thoracic oncology and interventional pulmonology or Interest in domiciliary NIV and sleep medicine
Experience and Ability
Essential criteria
- Experience of working within the NHS.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues in an MDT setting.
- Ability and willingness to work within the organisation’s performance framework and targets.
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- Experience of audit.
- Ability to perform workplace-based assessments.
Desirable criteria
- Management experience.
- Active commitment to teaching.
- Evidence of audit participation and design.
