Consultant - Emergency Department (Substantive)

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

''Creating a great place to be cared for and a great place to work''

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay has a firm commitment to strengthening the diversity of our workforce, and therefore welcome and encourage applications from likeminded people who can support our ambition to become effortlessly inclusive. We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.

Job overview

Applications for this substantive post will only be accepted if you are in the process of obtaining obtaining Specialist Registration via CCT or Professional Portfolio (formerly CESR) within six months of interview.

As a consultant in Emergency Medicine, you will join a highly experienced, multicultural team and benefit from a competitive package which includes  2 SPAs (flexible).  You will also be able to work the bulk of your SPA time flexibly, by agreement with the Clinical Director and Service Manager.

The department is also in the later stages of moving towards a flexible rostering system to enable medical staff to have greater control over when they deliver their clinical activity, within agreed constraints.

In addition, the Trust is heavily involved in both medical education and medical research and there is the opportunity for the right candidate to become involved in sub-specialties, if chosen.  In addition, due to the challenges faced by Emergency Medicine across the country, you will also have the opportunity to help influence and shape service delivery for the future.

Main duties of the job

  • This post will enhance the Consultant led delivery of Emergency Care to patients attending the Emergency Department of the Furness General Hospital.  A special interest in Paediatric Emergency care is desirable, but not essential.
  • This post offers candidates the unique opportunity to contribute to the further development of the service. Flexible working patterns are seen as essential to the ability of the Department to provide an optimal emergency service responsive to a changing NHS.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

FGH and RLI have full trauma unit status and are closely linked to the Major Trauma Centre at Preston.
